About this role

Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate, motivated, and proactive Staff Nurse to join our specialist Bladder and Bowel Service. This is an exciting opportunity to develop expertise in continence care while making a significant difference to the quality of life of adults living with bladder and bowel dysfunction.

The Bladder and Bowel Community Nurse plays a key role in delivering specialist continence care to adults across community settings. Working as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, the postholder provides holistic assessment, intervention, and management for individuals experiencing bladder and bowel dysfunction. The role involves delivering personcentred care plans, offering clinical expertise to patients, carers, and other health professionals, and promoting continence health through education and preventative strategies.

The nurse will work autonomously in clinics, patients' homes, and care environments, ensuring highquality, evidencebased practice is embedded within all aspects of care. The postholder will contribute to service development, undertake clinical audits, and support ongoing improvements in patient experience and outcomes. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and compassionate nurse to develop specialist skills and make a significant difference to the quality of life of people living with continence conditions.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

Undertake holistic bladder and bowel assessments, including history taking, physical assessment within scope of practice, and use of specialist continence tools.

Develop, implement, and review personalised care plans for adults with bladder and bowel dysfunction.

Provide evidencebased interventions such as bladder retraining, pelvic floor advice, bowel management programmes, catheter care, and promotion of conservative treatments.

Support patients with complex continence needs, including indwelling catheters, intermittent catheterisation, and neurogenic bladder or bowel conditions.

Deliver community visits in patients' homes, care homes, and other settings.

Triage clinical referrals, prioritise caseloads, and manage urgent continence issues safely and effectively.

Education & Support

Offer specialist advice, teaching, and emotional support to patients, families, and carers.

Provide training and guidance to other health and social care staff on best practice in continence care.

Promote continence awareness, healthy bladder and bowel habits, and preventative strategies.

Service & Quality

Maintain accurate, timely documentation in line with NMC standards and organisational policies.

Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives.

Contribute to the development of local continence pathways and support implementation of new evidence-based practice.

Qualifications Essential

*Current registration as a First Level General Nurse

Experience Essential

*Knowledge in Safeguarding, issues and procedures

*Previous experience in urology or functional bowel conditions *Previous community or care home experience

*Comments on policies and procedures in own area of practice. Implements policies as required. *General care of own equipment and responsibility to maintain stock control of standard items e.g. stationery when required. *Demonstrate own role to others as needed. *Responsible for the contemporaneous recording and storage of data or client records in accordance with Trust policies or professional judgement. *Work under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Specialist; report any major changes to the Clinical Nurse Specialist within an appropriate time frame. *Ability to assess, analyse and communicate with a wide range of professional and nonprofessional groups at individual or group level, on a wide range of often complex health and professional related issues. *Demonstrates high level and of verbal and written communication. *An ability to facilitate clear communication under a wide range of circumstances, which are often sensitive or complex in nature. *Ability to analyse and interpret complex facts or situations. *Ability to prioritise between competing demands on personal and professional resources *High levels of analytical and judgement skills maybe required on occasions *High degree of organisational and planning skills required to facilitate a wide variety of professional activities and demands from own practice. *Good time managements skills *Ability to manage junior members of staff in the absence of the caseload holder *Ability to work as part of a team *Highly developed interpersonal skill, which facilitates relationships with patients, clients and professionals from other disciplines and agencies *Requires flexibility to meet the needs of the service. *Can manage periods of intense concentration in dealing with complex issues. This may occur when dealing with difficult situations i.e. in the palliative care situation. *Car driver/car owner *To liaise with external business partners when required.

*Participate in audits as required *To have full knowledge of intermittent catheters, the range of products, indication and contraindication of use. To be able to deliver teaching of these products within the home or clinic setting to patients / carers or family members *To have full knowledge of trans anal irrigation, the range of product, indication and contraindication of use. To be able to deliver teaching of these products within the home or clinic setting to patients/ carers or family members. *To be familiar with different devices/products that help contain both urinary and faecal incontinence. Understand the use and appropriate fitting of the product. Teaching patients/ carers and family members.
