About this role

Job summary

We have stand-alone and rotation posts in Gerontology, Acute and General Medicine and specialities. These posts are suitable for doctors who have Foundation Competencies, having successfully completed a two-year Foundation Programme, or have achieved equivalent competencies, up to ST2.

We are a busy and friendly teaching hospital and will help the successful candidates, whatever their experience, to improve their portfolio, experience and skills. For candidates wishing to consider alternative completion of core competencies, we have experience in supporting balanced, bespoke training.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a clinical fellow programme across Gerontology and Acute and General Medicine. We have excellent links with critical care, emergency medicine and all our other specialities on site to develop the right experience for the right training.

Maintaining our clinical safety and excellent outcomes is important to us, our doctors work compliant, safe rotas with appropriately staffed teams. We encourage all junior clinical fellows to take part in outpatient clinics, and all posts include procedure training.

Postgraduate education and training are essential components of these posts; while the posts are designed for service, the post holders will have the same support from Educational and Clinical Supervisors, the Department of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education, with access, support and encouragement for all aspects of your professional portfolios, including access to teaching and training in departments and across the Trust, MRCP support and Appraisal support; we also have an International Doctors Development Programme.

Job description Job responsibilities

The successful candidates will undertake care for inpatients and some outpatients in their respective specialities. The majority of the posts are in General and Acute Medicine with speciality interests.

We are a busy, Central London, Teaching Hospital and the successful candidates will be exposed to a wide variety of patients in a well-supported and safe clinical environment; they will have support to learn the necessary procedures and skills for the posts, but also to develop their portfolios for their future career. Most posts come with an out-of-hours commitment, and in general and acute medicine, you will provide care for emergencies, unscheduled patients and ambulatory care on the acute Medical Take.

The successful doctors will work as part of a large integrated team across medicine and the specialities, but in particular with their closer team in the day-to-day running of their wards/ clinical services. They will be expected and supported to develop their whole professional portfolio, and this includes exposure to risk and performance management, clinical governance, audit and quality improvement, and, where relevant, to contribute to research.

We encourage staff to present their work locally, nationally and internationally, and the post-holder will be supported by paid study leave and a study leave budget by agreement.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training Essential

Registerable Medical qualification Full registration with GMC with License to Practice. Completed a Foundation Year equivalent Training with appropriately 6 months period spent in acute and/or general medicine. Competent in working without direct supervision, where appropriate, e.g. reviewing an unwell patient on a night shift Advanced Life Support Certification Understand the need for Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Desirable

MRCP part 1 or more or equivalent. Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD). Have carried out a period of clinical attachment in a UK hospital of at least one month

Administration / Management Desirable

Understanding of NHS

Research and Publications Essential

Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research.

Desirable

Publication of relevant review articles, research papers and case reports.

Audit and Clinical Governance Essential

Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.
