Job summary

We are seeking a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics to support the Department and the Trust in the provision of Elective and Emergency Orthopaedic Surgery with an emphasis on Hip and Knee Surgery.

The appointee will join a team of nine Arthroplasty Consultants and will work within the T&O team at large which includes Nineteen Consultants offering a range of sub-specialty services including Lower limb arthroplasty and soft tissue surgery, Foot & Ankle surgery, Spine surgery, Hip preservation surgery and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, and Hand and Wrist surgery.

There is a Trauma on call commitment associated with the post on a third on call 1:16 weekday and weekend basis. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the departmental programmes for education and training as well as the clinical governance process within the Department and the Trust. The post attracts an on-call availability supplement of Category A - low frequency: 1:9 or less frequent (3.0 % of full time basic salary).

Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the regulations all other categories of doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee. Applicants must continue to hold a License to Practise.

Main duties of the job

To maintain the highest clinical standards in the delivery of General Trauma and Specialist Arthroplasty Trauma & Elective Orthopaedic out-patient, operative and in-patient care

To provide outpatient services in Arthroplastyas agreed after appointment

To share with colleagues the provision of Trauma & Orthopaedic advice to medical and surgical inpatients

To work with colleagues, both medical and nursing to improve and advance the service.

To share with colleagues the responsibility for the management of the Department.

To share with colleagues the responsibility for teaching and training of trainees, junior medical staff, nursing staff, primary care colleagues and medical students.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications Essential

FRCS (Tr &Orth) or equivalent You must be on the specialist register for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors must be eligible to be on the GMC specialist register (evidence required prior to commencement) to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise

Desirable

Relevant higher degree ATLS Provider with current certificate Post Graduate Diploma in hand surgery (registered or completed)

Experience and Achievements Essential

Sub-Specialty Fellowship level training in Revision Lower Limb Arthroplasty Surgery for Hips and Knees Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Lower Limb elective and trauma Surgery Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general aspects of Trauma & Orthopaedics Ability to offer expert clinical opinions on range of problems within the specialty Wide based experience in Trauma & Orthopaedics Understanding current issues within Trauma & Orthopaedics and the future direction of the specialty Understanding current issues within the wider NHS Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions

Attendance at a recognised management course

Teaching and training Essential

Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
