Job summary
The postholder will provide specialist technical expertise in the maintenance, performance assurance, risk management and life cycle planning of the imaging modalities, including X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography, CT, MRI, theatres C-arms, and dental imaging.
The role oversees the full lifecycle of imaging assets--from specification and procurement through to commissioning, maintenance, quality assurance, and decommissioning.
They will act as the Trust's senior technical specialist for imaging devices, supporting clinical services, advising on equipment selection and governance and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks including MHRS, IR(ME)R and IEC standards and Trust Medical Devices Policy.
Main duties of the job
They will manage maintenance contracts, technologists, deliver corrective and preventive maintenance, perform acceptance and oversee QA testing, lead investigations, support procurement, and ensure compliance with safety legislation. When required they will also support maintenance across general medical devices such as patient monitors, infusion devices, ventilators, anaesthetic systems, fetal monitors, and other critical equipment.
It is expected that the post holder will work independently and have the responsibility for the management of supervision and training of other Clinical Technologists. On occasions they will be challenged by work of an unpredictable nature. The ability to readily adapt to change in priorities is a requirement for this post as no two days are the same. This activity will take place in departmental workshops, hospitals, patient's homes, and other healthcare environments part of Whittington Health NHS Trust, and our SLA's partners, travelling will be involved to and from sites. It can be anticipated that patients may be present who are subject to therapy, nursing or surgical procedures in the vicinity when fault investigation has to be done as a matter of urgency.
On occasions, the post holder will be required to work without any immediate managerial or supervisory support.
Manufacturer training will be provided where needs are highlighted and in consultation with of the Head of Clinical Engineering.

Job description Job responsibilities
Maintain oversight of the imaging asset register and ensure accurate data recording. Lead PPM and corrective maintenance of all imaging equipment. Respond to and resolve unplanned equipment faults quickly to minimise downtime. Provide first-line diagnosis of failures, liaising with OEM engineers when needed. Support Radiographers in resolving operational issues Attend Radiology meetings, Medical Device Committee meetings, and capital planning sessions as a technical advisor Contract manager for maintenance and ensure standards compliance. Perform complex fault diagnosis using specialised tools and OEM documentation. Oversee Imaging QA, acceptance testing and safety assessments in line with IRR17, IR(ME)R17 and MHRA guidance. Manage lifecycle planning, procurement input and installation oversight. Produce reports to support capital bids including risk based prioritization. Support PACS/RIS integration and imaging network considerations. Supervise, train and mentor junior technologists and apprentices. Act as senior technical contact for RPAs, Radiology, and if required other clinical areas. Maintain accurate CMMS records and documentation. Approve and review service reports and ensure these are stored in the local CMMS. Lead projects relating to service development and medical device evaluation. Assist in medical device incident investigations including data extraction. Ensure safe retrieval, handling and return of equipment. Participate in internal audits, governance and departmental meetings. Support quality management system development. Adhere to all Trust and department policies and procedures. They will assist the Head of Clinical Engineering conduct periodic internal audits. On occasions, to deputise for the Head of Clinical Engineering in their absence. Undertake suppliers and other external training courses to enable competency to be established in support of a wide range of medical devices. They will undertake departmental training events and gain further experience by working on occasions, under the supervision of senior staff. The post holder will have experience of annual appraisals. Participate in annual appraisal, identifying strengths and weaknesses and professional development. On occasions they will be the point of contact for all technical queries relating to corrective and preventative maintenance and be the expert. They will contribute to the supervision of newly appointed staff and co-ordinate technical manufacturer training They will have a general wide responsibility for the supervision of all technical staff in Clinical Engineering Department. This level of supervision can extend to having responsibility for the supervision of a team of staff, who have defined roles in terms of product type or location. They will possess skills to use on a wide range of test and measurement equipment, some of which are specific to the healthcare sector, to enable faults to be diagnosed and corrected on complex equipment, to module or component level. To develop skills and knowledge of junior colleagues to enable them to work on new medical devices initially under supervision and once competency is signed off, to work unsupervised. The post holder will be responsible for communicating with senior nursing and clinical staff in defining, recording and controlling configurations relating to medical devices.
