About this role

Job summary The Department of Blood Transfusion is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and professional Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for suitably qualified, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have completed their Specialist Portfolio, or the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice. You will work as part of a team covering both of our transfusion laboratories at Leeds General Infirmary and St. Jamess University Hospital. We operate a 24/7/365 shift under AFC terms and conditions; participation is a mandatory requirement of the post following suitable training.

Candidates should have proven specialist knowledge of blood transfusion.

We will consider appointing to Biomedical Scientist AFC Band 6 Annex 21 for candidates who can demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills or are already working towards their Specialist portfolio.

Main duties of the job The blood transfusion department is fully automated with Grifols Erytra technology including Grifols Blood Typing Manager, electronic issue using Clinisy Winpath Enterprise LIMS and Haemonetics Blood Track Software.

Leeds Teaching hospitals is a large acute hospital trust with specialties including Haematology and Oncology (Leeds Cancer Centre), Liver and Renal transplant, Cardiology, Leeds Major Trauma Centre, a dedicated Childrens hospital and a large maternity unit.

Opportunities for further study and CPD are strongly supported. The laboratory is approved for training by the IBMS.

Leeds Pathology Services are based across three hospital sites at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust: The Leeds General Infirmary, Chapel Allerton and St James’ University Hospital.

What you will bring to the role To undertake specialist clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.

Blood component issues, using both automated technologies and manual techniques.

Blood grouping, antibody screening and identification, direct antiglobulin testing, crossmatching and issuing of components.

Under direction of the team lead, will co-ordinate effective workflow management with prioritisation of samples received within specialist area.

Use of LIMS to enter, manage, retrieve, interpret, validate and authorise complex patient information and results.

To participate in equipment testing, validation and adaptation as a function of service development.

To operate, maintain highly complex laboratory equipment safely and efficiently. Use specialist expertise for complex trouble shooting and resolution of technical equipment failure and analytical processes.

This job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small tools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of clinical material

Assisting in the ordering, receipt and control of consumables,

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of a group of staff and the supervision of qualified staff or students.

To plan and prioritise the designated workload within a laboratory section and assist in the organization of tasks undertaken by other scientists and support workers.

To demonstrate relevant tasks to others as appropriate and complete.

To take account of changes in service delivery by demonstrating a flexible approach to work.

Actively supports and encourages individual and team development.

To be involved in the production of laboratory documentation such as SOPs, risk assessments and training records.

Supports a robust programme of training and competency assessment within the area of specialist responsibility, ensuring that procedures are only undertaken by staff with the requisite knowledge and skills at all times.

Participate actively in departmental internal and external quality assurance schemes.

Support appropriate clinical trials involving the laboratory.

Contributes to QMS compliance/alignment in specialist area.

To maintain registered status as a biomedical scientist with the Health Care Professions Council.

Participate in the maintenance of a safe working environment..

To gain new knowledge through experience, formal study and participation in relevant training schemes including CPD.
