About this role

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist for a Haematology role in South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust to join the Haematology Department at James Cook Hospital. You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of high-quality laboratory services within Haematology, ensuring accurate and efficient performance across routine and specialist testing. You will maintain your personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the role, actively engaging in training and development activities. You will also take part in regular performance reviews and contribute to your personal development planning on an annual basis. In addition, you will take responsibility for your own actions, demonstrate self-awareness in recognising your strengths and areas for improvement, and actively work to enhance your professional capability

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will be responsible for the operational delivery of Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion services, ensuring all laboratory processes are carried out in line with approved procedures and quality standards. You will be responsible for rotating across all sections within the specialty to maintain effective service provision and ensure continuity of diagnostic activity. You will be responsible for working independently and making appropriate decisions within your level of competence to support safe and effective service delivery. You will also be responsible for managing participation in a 24/7 rota system, including weekends, extended working days, and out-of-hours cover in accordance with departmental requirements. In addition, you will be responsible for assisting in the development of staff competence across multiple grades, ensuring adherence to established operational procedures and service standards.

Job description Job responsibilities

To maintain effective communication and working relationships across laboratory, pathology, and clinical teams, ensuring timely exchange of information and contributing to multidisciplinary discussions that support service delivery and problem resolution. To ensure full compliance with Trust policies and professional standards, including Infection Prevention and Control, Health & Safety, and laboratory governance requirements, consistently applying these within all aspects of practice. To carry out advanced analytical and equipment-related procedures within the laboratory environment, including routine maintenance and technical troubleshooting, ensuring issues are identified, documented, and escalated appropriately when required. To contribute to laboratory quality assurance and governance processes, including involvement in documentation control, completion of risk and COSHH assessments, and participation in audit and compliance activities to support service standards. To process, review, and support validation of clinical specimens in accordance with established protocols, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results while escalating urgent or abnormal findings in line with departmental procedures. To support the efficient organisation of laboratory workflow and service delivery, including prioritisation of tasks, coordination of workload activities, and contribution to resolving operational or technical issues in collaboration with senior colleagues.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with relevant professional registration. Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent recognised qualification. NHS laboratory experience within Haematology, Coagulation, or Blood Transfusion services. Competent in routine diagnostic techniques, specimen analysis, and use of laboratory equipment. Demonstrates understanding of quality systems, SOPs, and commitment to ongoing CPD
