Job summary
The General Practice Assistant (GPA) will provide essential administrative and clinical support to GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team within the practice. The role is designed to improve efficiency within the surgery by assisting with routine clinical administration, patient coordination, and basic healthcare duties under appropriate supervision.
The post holder will work closely with clinicians to support the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective patient care while helping to reduce GP workload. The GPA will ensure that patients receive a professional, compassionate, and efficient service and will contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the practice.
The role requires excellent communication, organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a busy healthcare environment while maintaining strict confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Main duties of the job Clinical Support
Prepare treatment and consultation rooms for clinics and procedures.
Undertake basic patient observations including:
Blood pressure
Height and weight
Temperature
Pulse monitoring
Carry out ECGs, urinalysis, and phlebotomy where trained and competent.
Chaperone patients during examinations when required.
Assist clinicians with minor procedures and patient care activities.
Prepare and process laboratory specimens according to practice procedures.
Maintain cleanliness, stock levels, and infection control standards within clinical areas.
Administrative Responsibilities
Support GPs with clinical administration and workflow management.
Process referrals, test results, correspondence, and patient documents.
Summarise and update patient medical records accurately using EMIS.
Scan and file clinical information onto patient records.
Assist with patient recalls, appointment coordination, and follow-up communication.
Support prescription administration processes in line with practice procedures.
Assist with QOF and enhanced service data collection and monitoring.

Process and manage patient correspondence, referrals, and test results.
Summarise patient records and update clinical systems accurately.
File and scan documents onto patient records using EMIS.
Manage appointment bookings and patient communications where required.
Assist with prescription administration processes in line with practice procedures.
Ensure accurate data entry and record keeping at all times.
Support QOF and enhanced service workstreams where appropriate.
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Experience working in a GP healthcare setting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Good organisational and time-management abilities. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Basic IT skills and ability to use clinical systems. Understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries. Compassionate, reliable, and patient-focused approach.
Desirable
Previous experience in General Practice or Primary Care. Knowledge of EMIS. Experience with medical terminology and clinical administration. Phlebotomy or ECG training. NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent.
