Information about Onsala Space Observatory Electronics Laboratory The position of Head of the Electronics Laboratory at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) is open for applications. The Onsala Electronics Laboratory performs a central role within the Onsala National Infrastructure whose mission is to provide access to radio astronomy instrumentation and related geoscience techniques in Sweden, for the use of scientists and other stakeholders. The Electronics Lab and the associated mechanical workshop at Onsala are involved in maintaining operational readiness of several radio telescopes at Onsala (20 m, 25 m diameter, Onsala twin telescopes, and a LOFAR phased array). The laboratory is also involved in developing new instrumentation for the above radio telescopes and for providing/operating new geoscience sensors at Onsala. The laboratory also designs and develops instrumentaton for major radio astronomy projects around the world (in particular for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) mid -frequency array in South Africa). The OSO Electronics laboratory recently completed the design and final prototyping of the Band 1 (350 MHz - 1050 MHz) receiver for SKA1-mid, which is now being tested on the MeerKAT array in South Africa. The Electronics Lab is presently in the process of starting new development projects related to SKA and to enhancing the Onsala telescopes for executing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. OSO is located at Råö near Onsala, approimately 45 km south of Gotheburg, with the site being shared with the academic astronomy and space geodesy units of Chalmers Department of Space, Earth and Environment. The OSO Electonics Laboratory also has strong collaborations with groups located on Chalmers main city centre campus such as the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD) and the Chalmers Department of Electrical Engineering's Antenna Group. Job description The appointed person will have personnel responsibility for up to 10 engineers/technicians in the OSO ELectronics Lab and its associated mechanical workshop. The Head of lab wil have the formal job grade ’Senior Research Engineer’ within the university. The ability to manage a technical group engaged in a mixture of maintainence, repair and development tasks is the most important requirement for the position. Knowledge in the design and construction of centimetre wavelength radio receivers for radio astronomy (or transferable experience from the communications field) is also a key requirement. The ability, demonstrated by experience to lead (or collaborate with others in leading) the system design of new receivers is highly desirable. The appointed person should have good project management and communication skills and be able to guide new projects through the stages of Concept, Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews. An important roll of the position is in maintaining and further developing key collaborations with other researchers and engineers at Chalmers and in Swedish industry. These contacts are important for developing future instrumentation for Onsala telescopes and for the SKA. The latter encompasses both in-house development of advanced receiver concepts for the SKA and also collaborating with industry in planning for potential Swedish industry deliveries of key elements as part of the construction of SKA. Position summary The position is a full-time permanent employment. Qualifications At Masters degree (or higher degree) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Radio Communications or similar is desirable for the position. Lower academic qualifications, if balanced by very extensive relevant experience may however also be acceptable. Knowledge and experience in maintaining, repairing and developing centimetre wavelength radio receivers is required. Project and personnel management experience are essential for the position. The successful candidate must have the ability to lead a technical group inolved in mixed tasks of essential maintenance, repair and development of new radio astronomy and geoscience instrumentation. Experience in leading the design and contruction of new radio receivers at centimetre wavelengths is highly desirable for the position. Good communications and interpersonal skills are required. An ability to understand/speak/read and write English for technical reports is required. Existing proficiency in Swedish is an advantage for the position.
