Information about the project and the division This PhD project departs from the academic fields of quality management and supply chain management, and seeks to respond to challenges such as digitalisation, servitization and sustainable development. In particular, the focus is on service improvement and innovation at firm level as well as in the wider context of the service supply chain of companies in both manufacturing and in more service-based sectors such as energy and logistics. The research project focuses mainly on empirical case-based research in close interaction with industry. Results of research are expected to be disseminated through interactions with professionals as well as publications in highly-ranked journals within the subject area. The position is placed at the Division of Service management and Logistics (SML), which is part of the Department of Technology Management and Economics. Services have become an integrated part of business, and the service element increases steadily in both the private and the public sector. The Division of Service Management and Logistics (SML) focus on the design, management and improvement of processes and services from the perspective of the individual organization as well as the wider supply chain. The key aim of our research activity is to address societal challenges and contribute to industrial leadership. The division has, in addition to manufacturing, a particular focus on three service-intensive sectors; healthcare, transport & logistics, and construction. The emphasis lies on resource utilization, improvement and development of processes as well as inter-organizational relationships. The division pursues problem-oriented and inter-disciplinary research, with strong emphasis on industry relevance with high visibility in leading academic journals. Our goal is to perform high quality research and education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. We focus mainly on empirical case-based research in close interaction with industry. Major responsibilities As PhD student you will take part in research at the division in the area of service management, building upon the academic disciplines of quality management, operations management and supply chain management. The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with the main supervisor. Your major responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, PhD studies include a number of doctoral courses, reviewing literature, conducting research studies, and interacting with industrial companies. As a PhD student you take an active role in the research project in preparing for and collecting empirical data, conducting analysis and presenting results. During the project, results will continuously be presented at seminars and on international conferences. Large emphasis when selecting a candidate will be laid on your ability to write. Position summary The position is a full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to five years (1+2+2). You will spend approximately 80% of this time on research. As a PhD student you will also, to a maximum of 20%, be involved in teaching bachelor and master courses and/or perform other departmental tasks. You will be enrolled into the postgraduate programme at the research school Technology Management and Economics. The employment is bound to successful completion of department evaluations after one and three years. Qualifications To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in e.g. industrial engineering and management or equivalent with an interest in service management studies and industrial challenges such as digitalisation, servitization and sustainable development. The applicant is expected to conduct empirical research as primary activity, foremost applying a qualitative research approach, but open towards learning about and use mixed-methods approaches. You need to be fluent in English and due to the character of the research very good skills in Swedish (understanding, speaking and writing) is required.
