Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced professional to join our Pathology Directorate as Pathology Governance & Compliance Manager. This senior leadership role is central to shaping, strengthening and assuring governance, quality and regulatory compliance across a large and complex Pathology diagnostic service.The postholder will support the development and implementation of a coherent, data-driven governance framework that provides assurance on quality, safety and regulatory compliance whilst fostering a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement.Working closely with clinical, scientific and operational leaders across multiple specialties, you will ensure that governance systems are robust, consistent and aligned with regulatory standards including UKAS, CQC, MHRA and HTA. You will also translate complex governance data into actionable insight, enabling informed decision making and supporting high quality patient care.The role reports to the Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing & Integrated Professions and will work across Derriford Hospital and other sites where required.

Main duties of the job

The Pathology Governance & Compliance Manager supports the Directorate triumvirate in the coordination, oversight and continuous improvement of governance, quality and assurance the Pathology Directorate. The post holder will:

Support the development and implementation of a coherent, data-driven governance framework that provides assurance on quality, safety and regulatory compliance

Enable the directorate triumvirate to maintain robust oversight of risk, incidents, audit and improvement activity

Promote a consistent and equitable approach to governance across all pathology services and sites

Translate complex governance data into actionable insight, supporting continuous improvement and service planning Foster a culture of openness, lea

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Governance & Assurance Framework1. Support the development and implementation and continuous improvement of governance systems and processes across the Pathology Directorate2. Ensure governance arrangements align with regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g. UKAS, CQC, MHRA, HTA)3. Support the directorate in maintaining a robust Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring consistency across services

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE Essential

Significant demonstrable experience of clinical governance, quality management or patient safety within an NHS or similarly complex organisation Demonstrable experience of managing incidents, risks and governance processes Demonstrable experience of analysing complex data and translating into actionable insight Demonstrable experience of leading or supporting quality improvement initiatives Proven knowledge of NHS governance frameworks, standards and regulatory requirements Demonstrable experience of influencing and working with multidisciplinary teams, including senior clinical staff Knowledge of governance systems such as DATIX and/or Q-Pulse Demonstrable experience of managing staff and leading teams in a complex environment Demonstrable experience of managing budgets and financial resources

Desirable

Demonstrable experience within pathology or diagnostic services Demonstrable experience of working in a multi-site or networked service Demonstrable experience of preparing reports for senior committees or boards Proven evidence of innovative problem solving and service improvement

QUALIFICATIONS Essential

Relevant first degree or equivalent demonstrable experience in healthcare, science, or governance-related field Proven evidence of continuing professional development in governance, quality or patient safety

Desirable

Professional registration with a recognised body (e.g. Health and Care Professions Council, Nursing and Midwifery Council or equivalent) Postgraduate qualification in quality management, clinical governance or patient safety Laboratory Medicine Quality Management qualification or equivalent Project or improvement qualification (e.g. PRINCE2, Lean, Quality Improvement methodologies)

APTITUDE & ABILITIES Essential

Ability to interpret complex governance and quality data to inform decision-making Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to influence at all levels

Desirable

Ability to deliver presentations and training to a range of audiences
