About this role

Job summary

The post holder will join the Diabetes and Endocrinology team as a Consultant Physician, contributing to:

Delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient diabetes and endocrine care. Acute diabetes and endocrine referrals and leadership during specialty take. General medical care during short stay ward weeks and general medical on-call shifts . Development of subspecialty interests in alignment with departmental priorities. Teaching, training and supervision of undergraduates and postgraduate trainees. Clinical governance, service development, quality improvement and research activity.

The successful applicant will help shape an expanding service at an exciting time of development, particularly as the integrated Weight Management Service evolves.

Main duties of the job

Key Elements of job plan:

1:8 Specialty Take Week 1:8 Short Stay Ward Week 24-hour General Medical On-Call (non-resident overnight + MRU day shift) Outpatient clinics across diabetes and endocrine subspecialties Community diabetes activity as agreed MDT sessions and admin time 1.5 SPA minimum, with flexibility for additional SPA depending on roles/interests Full PA breakdown will be agreed at job planning and reviewed 6 months after appointment.

Job description Job responsibilities

An exciting and rewarding opportunity has arisen to join the Diabetes and Endocrinology team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust as a Consultant Physician within a dynamic, progressive, and highly collaborative department. This post offers the successful applicant the chance to contribute to the delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient diabetes and endocrine services while working within one of the largest teaching hospitals in the Southwest. The role encompasses acute diabetes and endocrine referrals, leadership during specialty take weeks, participation in short stay ward care, and involvement in the general medical on-call rota, providing a varied and stimulating clinical workload. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and expand subspecialty interests in line with departmental priorities and service needs, supporting the continued growth and innovation of the service. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the post holder will play an important role in undergraduate and postgraduate education, supervision and mentorship of trainees, multidisciplinary team working, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement initiatives, and research activity. Person Specification

Education & qualifications Essential

Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise. CCT (or within 6 months of award at interview) in: Diabetes & Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine. MRCP(UK) or equivalent postgraduate medical qualification. Evidence of up-to-date CPD in accordance with RCP/GMC requirements. ALS certification (or willingness to obtain shortly after appointment).

Desirable

Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent). Postgraduate qualification in medical education, leadership, or clinical research. Completion of recognised teaching courses (e.g., PGCert, FHEA). Additional training or certification in diabetes technologies, metabolic medicine, or obesity/weight-management care.

Knowledge & Experience Essential

Broad and comprehensive training in the investigation and management of diabetes and endocrine disorders (including inpatient emergencies and dynamic endocrine testing). Experience in managing complex diabetes and endocrine inpatients across medical and surgical specialties. Demonstrable experience in acute medical care, including senior decision-making. Experience supervising junior medical staff and working within multidisciplinary teams. Evidence of participation in clinical audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance. Understanding of NHS structures, pathways, and the principles of safe, effective, patient-centred care.

Desirable

Experience in weight management/bariatric medicine, pre- and post-operative metabolic assessment, or working within Tier 3/Tier 4 pathways. Experience of delivering or overseeing diabetes technology clinics (pump therapy, CGM, hybrid closed-loop. Evidence of involvement in research, including publications, presentations or trial recruitment. Experience working across integrated care systems (ICS), including community diabetes services. Experience in service development or pathway redesign.

Aptitude & Abilities Essential

Excellent communication skills with patients, carers, colleagues and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to prioritise, delegate and manage competing clinical demands safely. Commitment to effective team-working, clinical leadership and collaborative problem-solving. Ability to deliver high-quality teaching and supervision for medical students and trainees. Demonstrable ability to make sound clinical judgements under pressure. Competence in IT systems, electronic patient records and digital communication.

Desirable

Ability to lead service innovation and guide teams through change Skills in clinical pathway development and cross-sector collaboration Experience delivering structured teaching sessions (simulation, small-group, lectures). Aptitude for using data to drive quality improvement or service evaluation.
