About this role

Job summary

The appointment is to commence in August 2026 for a fixed term period of 1 year. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Posts are shared between the Department of Ophthalmology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Health Sciences School, University of Sheffield. The post is ST1/2 level.

Main duties of the job

Please refer to the supporting job description and person specification which will outline the duties of the role including an indicative job plan.

Clinical Duties:

To assist in Outpatient Clinics, Emergency Eye Centre, Wards and Theatre.

These posts will provide Doctors wishing to undertake future training in Ophthalmology with experience in Sub-Specialty Clinics, Sub-Specialty Ward Rounds and Theatres.

This experience could be used for 'Credentialing' or obtaining further experience for inclusion in Portfolio.

Job description Job responsibilities

The duties of this post are equivalent to a Specialty Trainee ST1/2 and full details are listed in the Job Description document.

Person Specification

Clinical Experience Essential

Minimum of 24 months FTE experience on a UK Foundation Programme (or equivalent) by commencement in post NHS Experience (excluding Clinical Attachment) Commitment to a career in Ophthalmology

Desirable

Post registration experience in Ophthalmology Awareness of the management of Ophthalmic emergencies

Research Essential

Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate Basic understanding of research methods and statistics

Desirable

Publications in peer reviewed journals

Teaching and Training Essential

Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors Ability to prepare and deliver high quality teaching

Desirable

To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff Training in teaching methods

Continuous Professional Development Essential

Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last months

Desirable

Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Managment and Administration Essential

Organisational Skills

Personal Attributes Essential

Qualifications Essential

Basic Medical Degree Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise

Postgraduate qualifications in Ophthalmology Intercalated BMedSci Bsc.
