Laurel Bank Surgery is seeking an experienced and proactive HR Advisor to provide high quality, professional HR support across our three-site GP practice. This internal role is central to ensuring our workforce is appropriately recruited, supported, developed and gainfully employed, enabling the delivery of safe, effective and well led patient care.

You will act as the first point of contact for HR matters, support managers with employee relations, oversee recruitment and compliance, and contribute to wellbeing, culture and staff engagement initiatives.

We are looking for someone who combines technical HR expertise with empathy and sensitivity. You will work closely with the Managing Partner and leadership team to ensure our HR processes are fair, compliant and aligned with NHS and CQC expectations.

This role is ideal for a confident HR generalist who will enjoy autonomy, variety and meaningful work in a patient centred environment.

Main duties of the job

The HR Advisor provides first-line support across all people matters, advising managers on employee relations, coordinating recruitment and onboarding, maintaining workforce and compliance records, preparing payroll changes and employment documentation, and managing sickness and attendance processes. The role also supports flexible working requests, organisational change, policy updates, wellbeing initiatives and staff development, while ensuring HR systems, data and communications remain accurate, confidential and aligned with legal, NHS and CQC requirements.

Job description Job responsibilities

HR Advisory & Employee Relations Act as first point of contact for HR queries. Provide advice on disciplinary, grievance, capability and performance matters. Support conflict resolution and mediation. Ensure consistent, fair and legally compliant people management.

Recruitment, Onboarding & Workforce Compliance Coordinate end to end recruitment including drafting job descriptions and person specifications. Complete all pre employment checks including right to work, references, DBS and qualifications. Oversee induction and maintain accurate workforce compliance records. Manage GP trainee HR processes and rota administration.

Payroll, Contracts & Leave Management Prepare payroll amendments and liaise with the external payroll provider. Calculate annual leave and TOIL. Draft and issue contracts, variations and confirmation letters.

Attendance, Sickness & Occupational Health Monitor sickness trends and advise managers. Support return to work and long term absence processes. Liaise with Occupational Health regarding adjustments and wellbeing.

Flexible Working & Employment Changes Manage statutory and non statutory flexible working requests. Support organisational change and contract amendments.

Policy Development, Governance & Legal Liaison Review and update HR policies with external HR support. Ensure compliance with CQC and employment law. Prepare documentation for audits and inspections.

Wellbeing, Engagement & Staff Development Lead wellbeing initiatives and support appraisal processes. Promote learning, development and training compliance.

HR Systems, Data & Communication Maintain HR records and intranet content. Produce HR reports to support workforce planning. Communicate HR updates clearly and professionally.
