About this role

Job summary

This is a fixed term 6 month position with the potential to extend to a year for a candidate interesting in pursuing a career in anaesthetics. The post will commence at the start of August in line with national rotations.

Our department has a reputation for encouraging individual interests and we are delighted to be able to offer the applicant a choice of sub-specialty interest. The department provides the full range of DGH anaesthesia including Orthopaedic, General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, ENT and Oral Surgery lists. The successful candidate would be encouraged and supported to participate in education, audit or quality improvement projects.

ST3 level or equivalent (completed RCOA Stage 1 training or equivalent)

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would join the registrar 1:8 emergency on call rota. This on-call tier has primary responsibility to cover the emergency theatre, but also supports more junior CT2-3 colleagues covering obstetrics out-of-hours. It is therefore essential that any applicant has the ability to provide anaesthetic cover to labour ward. There is 24/7 consultant cover for theatres, labour ward and ICU.

About us

Our theatres provide elective, emergency and trauma surgery within multiple operating theatres allowing a throughput of ~26,000 cases each year. The department works with the multi-disciplinary team from numerous specialities; including ENT, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, General surgery etc. to deliver surgical care safely and of a high standard. The department works to support the latest technologies, such as robotic surgery and have two state of the art Robots used for urology, upper GI and colorectal surgeries.

The main site at RBH comprises of 19 operating theatres, in three separate complexes and one ring fenced Elective Orthopaedic Unit. South Wing Theatres - 7 theatres Redlands Theatres - Ring fenced Orthopaedic Unit, 4 theatres. Central Theatres - 5 theatres Maternity Theatres - 3 theatres, 1 procedural room Prince Charles Eye Unit and West Berkshire Community Hospital provide elective services within a self-contained day bed unit:

West Berkshire - comprises of 2 operating theatres and 1 procedural room Prince Charles Eye Unit - comprises of 2 operating theatres. The team specialise in Ophthalmology only within the unit. The department also supports services provided in Interventional and diagnostic Radiology, as well as external contracts with BHFT Dental Surgery, Prospect Park and Broadmoor.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent Primary FRCA

Desirable

FRCA final or equivalent e.g. FANZCA Provider status in one of the following: ALS, ATLS, or APLS

Clinical Experience Essential

Experience of working in the NHS At least ST3 level or equivalent (completed RCOA Stage 1 training or equivalent) Ability to provide anaesthetic cover for labour ward with remote supervision e.g. as evidenced by completion of Basic Competencies in Obstetric Anaesthesia (IAOC)

Desirable

Post registration experience of working in specialties relevant to anaesthesia Motivated to actively engage in the chosen fellowship sub-speciality (bariatrics, education, digital, research and development or general
