An exciting opportunity has arisen to help shape the future of medical appraisal across our Trust. We are inviting applications for Appraisal Lead roles at each of our hospitals. This is a chance to play a key part in strengthening our appraisal and revalidation processes, deepening your understanding of professional regulation, and contributing to a culture of high-quality, supportive development for all our doctors.

As we continue to align our approach with GMC and NHSE guidance, we are committed to building a robust, transparent and consistent appraisal system for Consultants, SAS, LED, IMG and CAPS doctors across our group. Your leadership will be central to ensuring this ambition becomes reality.

Main duties of the job

Quality Assurance

Promoting excellence in medical appraisal to deliver robust revalidation recommendations and quality improvements in patient care through the professional development of doctors.

Performing quality assurance exercises and providing reports to the RO (e.g. ASPAT audit)

Monitoring and participating in peer review exercises to ensure performance of existing appraisers and appraisals outputs are high quality and conducted in line with national, regional and local guidance, and that regular feedback is provided.

Appraisal system and processes

Recruiting and selecting medical appraisers.

Attend monthly ROAG meeting

Participate and organise the delivery of competency based new appraiser training and supporting them through a learning and onboarding period, providing feedback on their performance.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Medical doctor GMC license to practice fully registered for the previous 5 years or more and of good standing Trained and experienced appraiser

Desirable

Higher qualification in education and or clinical leadership

Experience Essential

Experience of delivering and managing appraisal, supporting doctors to deliver their potential including those in difficulty Experience of working as a senior doctor Successful track record in clinical leadership e.g. operational or educational with delivery of innovation, improvement and compliance Experience and knowledge of clinical governance and of the measures to ensure patient safety Track record of managing, engaging with and developing staff Proven experience of partnership working and stakeholder management

Desirable

Experience of managing or investigating FTP/MHPS cases Experience of setting up and delivering training programmes

Knowledge Essential

Understanding of the revalidation, appraisal and performance needs of a large tertiary referral healthcare/NHS provider Knowledge of the GMC Framework for medical appraisal and revalidation and the GMC supporting information for appraisal and revalidation Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of the medical appraiser and clinical appraisal lead Knowledge of the purpose and process of medical appraisal Knowledge of the purpose and principles of revalidation Knowledge of responsibilities of doctors as described in Good Medical Practice Knowledge of principles of clinical governance, evidence based medicine and clinical effectiveness Knowledge of relevant local and national healthcare context Knowledge of current NHS structures, including the role of regulators Understanding and application of principles of equality and diversity Understanding and application of principles of information governance Understanding and application of legislation and guidance relating to data protection and confidentiality
