Job summary
The Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiology provides specialist cardiac care to infants, children, and young people at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales. Appointed at ST4-8 equivalent level, the post holder functions as the Paediatric Cardiology Registrar within a consultant-led multidisciplinary team.
The role involves day-to-day management of inpatient cardiology services, including ward rounds, assessment of acute referrals, and provision of cardiology advice to general paediatrics, PICU, NICU, surgical teams, and the Emergency Department. Participation in paediatric resuscitation and emergency care is integral.
The Fellow contributes to outpatient clinics, nurse-led postoperative and rapid-access clinics, and Joint Cardiac Clinics. The post includes supervised experience in cardiac investigations such as echocardiography, ECG interpretation, Holter monitoring, exercise testing, and coordination of cardiac CT and MRI.
Participation in the paediatric cardiology on-call rota, teaching, audit, quality improvement, research, and clinical governance activities is expected. All duties are undertaken in line with Health Board policies and Good Medical Practice, with appropriate supervision.

The Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiology will provide day-to-day clinical care to infants, children, and young people with congenital and acquired cardiac conditions at Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales. Working at ST4-8 equivalent level, the post holder will function as the Paediatric Cardiology Registrar within a consultant-led multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities include coordination of inpatient cardiology care, participation in ward rounds, assessment and management of acute referrals, and provision of cardiology advice to general paediatrics, PICU, NICU, surgical teams, and the Emergency Department. The post holder will contribute to paediatric resuscitation and emergency care, including leadership roles as appropriate.
The role includes participation in outpatient clinics, nurse-led postoperative and rapid-access clinics, and Joint Cardiac Clinics. The Fellow will undertake supervised cardiac investigations, including echocardiography, ECG interpretation, Holter analysis, exercise testing, and coordination of cardiac CT and MRI.
The post holder will take part in the paediatric cardiology on-call rota, contribute to teaching and training, and engage in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities in line with Health Board and training requirements.

Job description Job responsibilities
1. Clinical CareInpatient management:Participate in daily ward rounds, review inpatients, contribute to management plans, and respond to acute referrals across paediatrics, PICU, NICU, and the Emergency Department.Emergency response:Lead the resuscitation team when required and support stabilisation of children presenting with acute cardiac issues.Consultations:Provide specialist cardiology input to other paediatric teams and offer timely advice for both emergency and routine referrals.
2. Outpatient Activity- Attend and support consultantled cardiology clinics.- Participate in nurseled postoperative and rapidaccess clinics (Mondays and Fridays).- Support preparation and coordination of Joint Cardiac Clinic (JCC) lists, reports, and communication of clinical issues.
3. Cardiac Investigations- Under supervision, the Fellow is expected to:- Perform echocardiograms (TTE).- Interpret ECGs, Holter recordings, and exercise tests.- Coordinate and request CT/MRI cardiac imaging.- Assist in the overall diagnostic and monitoring processes for patients with congenital and acquired heart disease.
4. OnCall Duties- Participate in a 1in5 nonresident cardiology rota, covering evenings, nights, and weekends.- Provide emergency assessments, advice, and support for acute cardiac presentations.- Ensure safe handover and maintain highquality communication across shifts.
5. Teaching and Education- Contribute to the departments structured programme of teaching, including case discussions, specialist teaching sessions, and multidisciplinary meetings.- Provide bedside and practical teaching for medical students, SHOs, and juniors.- Take part in Grand Rounds, regional study days, and simulation training.- Maintain an educational portfolio and engage fully with assigned educational supervision.
6. Audit, Quality Improvement, and Governance- Complete at least one audit or QI project every 612 months.- Participate in bimonthly safety and quality meetings, mortality and morbidity reviews, and clinical governance activities.- Engage in service evaluation and contribute to pathway or guideline development.
7. Research Participation- Take part in research projects supported by the Children and Young Adults Research Unit.- Contribute to data collection, literature reviews, presentations, and departmental initiatives.- Attend and present at cardiac-surgical MDT meetings with Bristol colleagues.
8. Multidisciplinary Collaboration- Work closely with PICU, NICU, general paediatrics, cardiac surgery teams, radiology, and other paediatric subspecialties.- Contribute to coordinated care for children with complex multimorbidity or pre/post-surgical needs.- Ensure clear, respectful communication with colleagues, patients, and families.
9.
