Requirements
- Experience leading a data engineering team, with ownership of strategy and delivery.
- Strong technical grounding in SQL, Azure, Azure Data Factory and ETL/ELT, including cloud migration and architecture.
- Confidence challenging senior stakeholders and making a clear case for investment.
- Enough engineering depth to step into technical details and help the team move forward.
- Experience exploring how AI can improve engineering, automation or platform operations, and the ability to put useful ideas into practice and evaluate their impact.
Responsibilities
- Turn business priorities into a data engineering strategy the team can deliver.
- Lead and develop a team of ten, providing technical direction and mentoring.
- Own the architecture and migration from on-premises SQL to Azure.
- Make decisions about tooling, investment and suppliers, and explain them to senior leadership.
- Set engineering standards for data modelling, pipelines, quality, governance, automated deployments and production reliability.
- Own the data engineering strategy, architecture and roadmap, including the tooling, budget and suppliers.
- Decide where Microsoft Fabric fits and determine the foundations and steps needed for adoption.
- Support delivery by working through designs with the team and providing hands-on engineering help when needed.

We are an established online business with a ten-person data engineering team and a substantial platform programme ahead. We are preparing to move from on-premises SQL to Azure and exploring Microsoft Fabric. There is strong interest in AI and its potential to improve engineering, automation and platform operations. This Manchester-based role is hybrid, reports to the C-suite and offers direct access to senior leadership, ownership of the data engineering function, and the opportunity to develop the team and shape the platform programme. Salary is up to £100,000.
