About this role
Salary: £60,000 - 65,000 per year
Requirements
- Significant commercial Rust experience, ideally in performance-sensitive or systems-level work
- Deep understanding of Rusts ownership model, lifetimes, and type system, and ability to design clean APIs around them
- Architectural mindset, using traits, generics, and modular crate design to build maintainable, extensible systems
- Strong code review skills, including the ability to provide constructive feedback and identify subtle logic errors, unnecessary unsafe code, and design drift
- Solid understanding of Rust concurrency, including Send and Sync, synchronisation primitives, and data-parallel libraries such as Rayon
- Experience writing and reviewing unsafe code responsibly, with clear safety invariants
- Familiarity with the Rust toolchain and quality tools, including Cargo, Clippy, rustfmt, Miri, and sanitisers
- Experience developing on Linux
- Desirable: commercial C++ experience and confidence working across a mixed Rust/C++ codebase
- Desirable: Rust-C++ interoperability using tools such as cxx or bindgen
- Desirable: Python bindings with PyO3 and maturin, and Python testing with pytest
- Desirable: experience with AI-assisted development, such as using Claude Code and directing coding agents on architectural decisions
- Desirable: experience implementing algorithms from specifications and reasoning about their efficiency and complexity
- Desirable: async Rust, such as Tokio, and network programming
- Desirable: benchmarking and profiling with tools such as Criterion and perf
- Desirable: Docker and containerised build environments
- Desirable: maintaining CI/CD pipelines

More
We develop advanced cheminformatics software that helps scientists understand and work with chemical data. Were looking for an experienced Rust Software Engineer to join our small, growing Glasgow team and build robust, high-performance components that turn scientific algorithms into safe, efficient, well-tested code, integrated with our established C++ codebase. Were an international, close-knit company whose Glasgow team works with colleagues in small offices in Germany and France. This senior role offers meaningful scientific software work and the opportunity to influence our architecture, code quality, and the teams development. The position is based in Glasgow with hybrid working split 50/50 between home and office. Salary is up to £65,000, depending on experience.
