Salary: £80,000 - 90,000 per year
Requirements: We are looking for a technically excellent software architect with the standing to command the respect of an accomplished engineering team.We need someone whose background began in software engineering, writing code and progressing into architecture.We value experience at senior level within an organisation, alongside close working relationships with development teams.We are seeking a capable communicator who can translate customer requirements into software the team can build.We value experience working with teams in more than one country and an understanding that working styles differ by location.We place real value on engineers who have seen a product through its full life cycle, from introduction through maturity to retirement.A working knowledge of industrial protocols such as OPC and common field buses would be an advantage.Security-first thinking, with software designed with cyber resilience in mind from the outset, would be particularly valued.We are looking for someone with a long-term mindset; frequent short tenures are unlikely to suit.We require the role to be based on site in Royston, Cambridge, three days per week, with no fully remote arrangement.The position is permanent and intended as a long-term appointment. Responsibilities: We want you to define how our entire software platform should look across every component, including the data management strategy.We need you to take ownership of the software vision and steer it forward.You will understand our two mature software platforms in depth, including how they are constructed, why they were built that way, and where their strengths and liabilities lie.You will decide the way forward for the platforms, including whether to extend what works or define a new platform.You will work closely with product management, hardware leads, and technology leads to define the software roadmap and the platforms future.You will take line management responsibility for the software team and, in time, software colleagues based in another country.You will partner with a technical lead elsewhere to determine, on a global basis, what gets built and how.You will engage directly with customers where appropriate and translate customer needs into clear software requirements.You will balance what is exposed to the customer against what is automated beneath the surface to keep the product straightforward to use.You will act as the technical figurehead for the software team and set direction while bringing colleagues with you. We are a well-established manufacturer of advanced, ruggedised electronic hardware and precision equipment built to perform reliably in demanding real-world conditions. Our software sits behind each product and runs across multiple processing units. This is a collaborative role based in Royston, Cambridge, with hybrid working from home available and three days per week on site. The salary is up to £90,000 plus bonus, and the role is permanent and intended as a long-term appointment.
