About this role
Remote | Candidates must live within 40 miles of Austin, TX; Fort Mill, SC; San Diego, CA; Tempe, AZ; or New York CityWe are seeking an experienced Cloud Security Architect to help design, review, and mature security across cloud, data, API, and on-premises environments within a large enterprise organization. This is a highly technical security architecture position for someone who has progressed from hands-on security engineering into security architecture. We are not looking for a general Cloud Architect with limited security experience.
The ideal candidate has deep cybersecurity expertise and can evaluate complex architectures, identify security risks, create architecture diagrams and patterns, and work directly with engineering teams to develop secure solutions. Approximately 80% of this role will focus on security architecture and security reviews, including architecture diagrams, design reviews, security patterns, API reviews, and security recommendations.
Top Skills We're Looking For
- 1. Security Architecture + Hands-On Engineering Background
You should have a strong foundation in hands-on security engineering, infrastructure, networking, or systems and have since moved into a dedicated Security Architect role. You should be comfortable:
- Conducting security architecture and design reviews
- Creating architecture diagrams and reference architectures
- Developing reusable security patterns
- Identifying risks within proposed technical solutions
- Recommending practical security controls
- Working directly with engineering and development teams
This position requires someone who can get into the technical details, not someone operating primarily at the governance or strategy level.
- 2. AWS Cloud Security
The environment includes both AWS and Azure, with a heavier emphasis on AWS. Candidates should have extensive experience designing, implementing, or reviewing security solutions in AWS.Key areas include:
- AWS IAM and access control
- Network and infrastructure security
- Encryption and key management
- Data protection
- Cloud security controls and guardrails
- Logging and threat detection
- Vulnerability management
- Secure cloud architecture patterns
Azure security experience is a plus.
- 3. API Security Reviews
Strong experience conducting API architecture and security reviews is an important requirement. You should understand security considerations surrounding areas such as:
- Authentication and authorization
- OAuth/OIDC and identity
- API gateways
- Secrets and credential management
- Encryption and TLS
- Access control and least privilege
- Logging and monitoring
- API exposure
- OWASP API security risks
You should be able to review an API architecture, identify potential risks, and recommend appropriate security controls.
- 4. Enterprise-Scale Security
This is a large, complex enterprise technology environment, so we're seeking candidates who have designed or reviewed security solutions at significant scale. Experience working across multiple applications, cloud environments, engineering teams, business units, and technology platforms will be important.
- 5. Security Frameworks & Standards
Candidates should have strong working knowledge of industry security frameworks and standards, including:
- NIST
- CIS Critical Security Controls
- OWASP
- Cloud Security Alliance / CSA CCM
- ISO 27000 series
- SOX security controls
What You'll Do
- Lead architecture and security design reviews for new and existing technology solutions.
- Create and maintain security architecture diagrams, reference architectures, patterns, and standards.
- Review cloud architectures with a primary focus on AWS security.
- Perform security reviews of APIs, scalable web applications, cloud services, and distributed systems.
- Identify cybersecurity risks and recommend practical controls and remediation approaches.
- Develop reusable security patterns that engineering teams can leverage throughout the enterprise.
- Evaluate IAM, network security, encryption, data protection, infrastructure, and vulnerability-management controls.
- Partner with Data and Enterprise Architects to secure sensitive data through technologies including encryption, masking, and tokenization.
- Evaluate emerging security threats and determine their potential impact on enterprise environments.
- Develop and review cybersecurity standards and validate that appropriate security requirements and controls are being addressed.
- Participate in architecture review boards and technical security discussions.
- Support the secure integration of new technologies, applications, and environments.
- Clearly communicate security risks and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders.
Required Experience
- 10+ years of experience across cybersecurity, information security, technology risk, infrastructure, or related disciplines.
- Significant experience working as a Security Architect or Cloud Security Architect within a large enterprise environment.
- Previous hands-on engineering experience in security, infrastructure, networking, systems administration, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience designing, implementing, or reviewing cloud security solutions.
- Strong AWS security architecture experience.
- Extensive experience performing API security and architecture reviews.
- Deep knowledge of IAM, encryption, network security, data protection, and cloud security.
- Experience with firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention, vulnerability-management, and threat-detection technologies.
- Experience applying security standards and frameworks such as NIST, CIS, OWASP, ISO 27000, and CSA CCM.
- Experience securing scalable web architectures and distributed systems.
- Ability to translate security risks and requirements into practical engineering recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- CCSP
- CISSP
- GIAC or other relevant security certifications
- Azure security experience
- Experience securing data within complex enterprise environments
- Experience supporting technology integrations or M&A environments
- Strong understanding of emerging threats, attack techniques, malware, and vulnerability management
What Success Looks Like
The strongest candidate will combine architecture-level thinking with hands-on technical depth. You should be comfortable getting into the details of an AWS environment or API architecture, identifying where meaningful security risks exist, and helping engineering teams determine how to address those risks without unnecessarily slowing down delivery. Success in this role requires the ability to:
- Communicate effectively with engineers, architects, security teams, and business stakeholders.
- Explain complex security risks in practical terms.
- Balance security requirements with scalability, performance, and business needs.
- Manage multiple architecture reviews simultaneously.
- Build consensus across teams with different priorities.
- Work independently while collaborating closely with engineering and architecture teams.
Why This Opportunity?
This organization is continuing to expand its cloud, API, data, and emerging technology capabilities, creating an opportunity for an experienced Security Architect to have meaningful influence over how security is designed into new solutions. Rather than simply maintaining existing controls, you'll help define the security patterns, architecture standards, and review processes used to secure technology across a large enterprise environment.
