About this role
Job Title: CNC Programmer / Prototype MachinistJob DescriptionThis role focuses on prototype fabrication to support product and process development, as well as low-volume production for internal manufacturing. You will program, set up, and operate CNC and manual machines while collaborating closely with engineering to move products and processes from initial concept to efficient, larger-scale manufacturing. Success in this position requires strong multi-tasking abilities in a fast-paced environment and the ability to work independently while providing practical input on manufacturability and process improvements.
Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate CNC lathes and mills, including HAAS CNC-lathes (Mill Turn with live tooling) and HAAS CNC-mills, as well as manual mills and lathes.
- Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs to support prototype fabrication and low-volume production, with approximately half of the work dedicated to programming and the other half to machine setup and running.
- Utilize CAMWorks and SolidWorks software to generate toolpaths and machining strategies for complex parts, typically in small batches of around 10 units per part.
- Design and fabricate custom workholding devices, fixtures, and jigs as needed to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient machining of prototype and production components.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, including oil and coolant changes, to maintain smooth, trouble-free operation of CNC and manual equipment.
- Collaborate closely with the engineering team to provide feedback on manufacturability, process improvements, and efficient methods for transitioning from prototype to larger-scale manufacturing.
- Interpret drawings, models, and specifications to plan machining operations and ensure parts meet dimensional, quality, and functional requirements.
- Work independently in the machine shop, managing priorities, organizing workflow, and completing all aspects of assigned jobs with minimal supervision.
- Use computers and Microsoft Office applications to document work, communicate with engineering, and support general shop and project-related tasks.
Essential Skills
- At least 5 years of experience as a machinist, including hands-on work with CNC and manual mills and lathes.
- At least 3 years of experience in CNC programming, ideally in a prototype or precision manufacturing environment, preferably related to medical devices.
- Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC lathes and mills, including HAAS machines, as well as manual milling machines and lathes.
- Ability to design and fabricate workholding devices, fixtures, and jigs to support prototype and low-volume machining.
- Experience using SolidWorks and CAMWorks for part modeling and CNC programming, or equivalent CAM software such as Mastercam or Surfcam.
- Beneficial experience with Siemens ShopTurn or similar CNC control interfaces.
- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office for documentation and communication.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a strong self-starter with minimal supervision, taking ownership of all aspects of the role needed to complete assigned work.
- High school diploma or equivalent education.
