About this role

Job Title: CNC OperatorJob DescriptionAs a CNC Operator, you will work in a dedicated machining cell operating horizontal milling centers, primarily 5-axis and 6-axis machines. You will load and unload parts, perform precise quality checks, and collaborate closely with set-up machinists to ensure machines run efficiently and produce high-quality components. As you demonstrate initiative, you will receive training in machine set-ups and take on first piece inspections to verify dimensions before full production runs.

Responsibilities

  • Operate horizontal milling centers, primarily 5-axis and 6-axis machines, to produce precision parts.
  • Collaborate with set-up machinists to ensure machines are properly configured and running efficiently.
  • Load and unload parts from CNC machines in a safe and consistent manner.
  • Perform first piece inspections to confirm all dimensions are set accurately prior to production.
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, and other gauges to verify parts are within specification.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings to determine machine specifications and part requirements.
  • Apply and eventually execute G and M codes as needed to support machine operations.
  • Work with various materials, including aluminum and ductile iron, while maintaining consistent quality.
  • Monitor machine run times, typically ranging from approximately 30 minutes to just over an hour, and adjust workflow accordingly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in alignment with facility standards.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to enhance quality, efficiency, and workflow.
  • Assist with or learn CNC set-ups as training and experience increase.

Essential Skills

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in CNC machining with a focus on machine operation.
  • Hands-on experience operating CNC horizontal milling centers.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining processes, including milling and cutting operations.
  • Ability to perform first piece inspections and verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Comfort working with multi-axis CNC machines, including 5-axis and 6-axis configurations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality standards.
  • High School Diploma or Technical School education preferred but not required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating or familiarity with horizontal milling centers from modern brands and models.
  • Exposure to or interest in learning G and M code programming.
  • Background in job shop environments with CNC mills, lathes, and grinders.
  • Experience with multi-axis CNC machines, specifically 5-axis and 6-axis, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CNC control systems such as Fanuc.
  • Experience with software tools such as Mastercam or similar CAM systems.
  • Knowledge of tooling, build tools, and general metal cutting practices.
  • Exposure to vertical mills, CNC lathes, and milling machines.
  • Comfort working with materials such as aluminum and ductile iron.
  • Willingness to learn CNC set-up and expand skills beyond basic operation.

Why Work Here? You will join a supportive team that focuses on continuous improvement and creating a better working environment every day. The facility offers a clean, climate-controlled space that promotes comfort and consistency, helping you perform at your best. You will work with modern equipment and have opportunities to grow your technical skills, including exposure to advanced multi-axis machining and set-up responsibilities. The culture emphasizes teamwork, organization, and a well-structured shop floor, allowing you to focus on quality work and professional development.

Work EnvironmentYou will work in a medium-sized, well-organized facility that is clean, climate controlled, and thoughtfully laid out to support efficient workflows. The shop currently runs approximately eight CNC machines, with plans to add two to three more, providing access to modern horizontal milling centers, including 5-axis and 6-axis equipment from recent model years. Typical machine run times range from about 30 minutes to just over an hour, creating a steady, manageable pace of work. The environment is supportive and structured, with a focus on cleanliness, organization, and safety, and you will work with advanced CNC technologies, precision measuring instruments, and a variety of metal materials.
