About this role
Job Title: DrafterJob DescriptionThe Drafter plays a key role in transforming client drawings into accurate, shop-ready detail drawings using 2D CAD tools. This position focuses almost entirely on computer-based work, managing and organizing data within existing drawings and translating them into clear, precise documentation for fabrication. The Drafter works on projects of varying sizes, sometimes independently and other times as part of a larger drafting and checking team, supporting a wide variety of clients in a growing and expanding organization.
Responsibilities
- Work primarily on a computer to manage and update client-provided drawings, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all data within the files.
- Translate client drawings, where most of the CAD work is already completed, into detailed shop drawings suitable for fabrication and production.
- Produce and modify 2D CAD drawings; focus exclusively on 2D work without involvement in 3D design or product design.
- Collaborate with a team of drafters and checkers, working on projects that may range from solo assignments to large efforts involving multiple team members.
- Interpret and apply information from flat prints and blueprints to create precise, clear, and usable shop detail drawings.
- Coordinate with shop personnel to ensure drawings are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with fabrication requirements.
- Use Excel to organize, manipulate, and analyze drawing-related data, including tasks such as working with pivot tables, performing data manipulations, and using HLOOKUP functions.
- Communicate clearly in both written and verbal form with team members, shop staff, and other stakeholders to clarify requirements and resolve drawing-related issues.
- Apply mechanical aptitude and understanding of fabrication, piping, and metal work to ensure drawings reflect real-world constraints and best practices.
- Review and check drawings for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards before release to the shop.
Essential Skills
- Associate's degree in CAD or drafting.
- At least 1 year of AutoCAD experience, specifically working with 2D drawings.
- Ability to read and interpret flat prints and blueprints accurately.
- Mechanical inclination, such as experience working on vehicles, performing home improvements, or working in a shop environment.
- Minimum of 6 months of Excel experience, including pivot tables, data manipulation, and use of HLOOKUP functions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computers and general computer applications.
- Experience working as a drafter or checker in a technical or fabrication-focused environment.
- Familiarity with piping drawings and related drafting practices.
- Basic understanding of metal fabrication and shop processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 3 or more years of AutoCAD experience.
- 2 or more years of drafting experience within a piping setting.
- Experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, or welding.
- Experience working in or closely with a fabrication shop environment.
- Comfort working with shop-related documentation and terminology.
Work EnvironmentThis role is primarily office-based and computer-focused, with approximately 99% of work performed on a computer using 2D AutoCAD and Excel. The Drafter joins a team of about 10 drafters and checkers in a growing organization that serves a wide variety of clients and project types. The position requires regular interaction with a fabrication shop environment that is loud and noisy, and the Drafter will interface with shop personnel to support production needs. The work involves handling technical documentation, metal and piping-related drawings, and shop detail packages, all within a collaborative, project-driven setting.
