Brief Job Description

The School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences is seeking to appoint an Assistant or Associate Professor in Sport Data Science and AI. The post holder will contribute to research, education, and academic citizenship. They will develop or lead internationally excellent research applying contemporary computational methods to real-world problems in sport data science or related areas. They will be expected to publish high-quality research, secure or show strong potential to secure external and/or industry-linked funding, and build collaborations within the School, across the University, particularly with Computer Science, and with external sport or industry partners.

The post holder will contribute substantially to teaching and programme development, particularly on the MSc Sport Data Science and AI. They will design, deliver, and, where appropriate, lead innovative teaching in sport data science, utilising AI-assisted approaches such as prompt-based coding, for students from sport science and other non-STEM backgrounds. They will also contribute to assessment, dissertation supervision, project-based learning, industry-relevant student projects, student support, knowledge exchange, employability activity, and School administration.

Person Specification

Applicants should hold a PhD in Sport Science, Computer Science, or another relevant STEM discipline. They should have expertise in sport data science and analytics, including machine learning, AI-based methods, data mining, or large-scale data analysis. Assistant Professor applicants should demonstrate high-quality research outputs appropriate to their career stage and potential to secure external or industry-linked funding. Associate Professor applicants should demonstrate an established research profile, sustained high-quality outputs, a track record of securing external or industry-linked funding, and evidence of leadership in education, research, programme development, or external engagement. All applicants should demonstrate effective communication, collaboration, organisation, mentoring, academic citizenship, and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
