About this role

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity within our Emergency Department for an experienced nurse with a passion for Emergency Medicine education and the development of the ED workforce.

The successful candidate will:

Support and facilitate the development of clinical practice assessors and supervisors in line with the NMC's new standards for teaching and learning in the clinical environment. Coordinate and provide on-site support, educational input, and development activities for all nursing staff and other learners. Develop, coordinate, and implement educational programs in collaboration with the Practice Education team and Link Lecturers from the trust's Higher Education Institution (HEI) partners.

This role is ideal for a proactive, enthusiastic nurse committed to enhancing clinical education and workforce development in a fast-paced Emergency Department environment.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Education & Workforce Development

Promote a learning environment that supports nurses' clinical development and encourages evidence-based, best-practice patient care. Coordinate, deliver, and evaluate the in-house education programme for the Emergency Department. Support the continuing professional development and overall clinical performance of ED staff in conjunction with the ED Matron. Work closely with other clinical educators and PDNs across the trust to ensure a consistent approach to practice education.

Programmes & Frameworks

Develop a Competency Progression Framework for all nursing staff. Support and coordinate the preceptorship programme for newly qualified nurses. Collaborate with the Trust and HEIs to organise and deliver educational programmes and training for ED staff.

Quality & Evidence-Based Practice

Ensure all clinical practice in the ED reflects current evidence, trends, and best-practice standards. Promote quality nursing care through clinical audit, quality improvement, and risk management initiatives.

Leadership & Mentorship

Facilitate the development of clinical practice assessors/supervisors in line with NMC teaching and learning standards. Provide on-site support, mentorship, and guidance to nursing staff and other learners.

Job description Job responsibilities

1. To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the wards, Care Group and Trust-wide.

2. To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice.

3. To work as a clinical and professional role model.

4. To work clinically in all allocated wards and departments for the majority of working time, or in accordance with an identified urgent need, supporting individual nurses/staff in developing their practice.

5. To produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning achieved and areas for further development.

6. To demonstrate specialist nursing knowledge in clinical settings, and support the advancement of knowledge and skills using approved assessment procedures.

7. To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment.

8. To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff.

9. To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the care group, ensuring effective communication at all times.

10. To maintain records of training undertaken by each member of staff- in conjunction with ward managers.

Education and Training

1. To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all nursing staff within Emergency Department, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments.

2. To develop and co-ordinate planned educational programmes and opportunities for all nursing staff.

3. To advise in relation to educational opportunities and assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives.

4. To assist the Trust's clinical education team helping Registered Nurses/Associate Nurses achieve competency requirements following training.

5. To create, sustain and support an environment where practice development and change can flourish.

6. To support practice supervisors/assessors and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised.

7. To work closely with HEI staff and the trusts Head of Practice and Education in contributing to the development and review of speciality-related nursing courses, and in the evaluation of relevant courses in order to help inform Education Commissioning.

8. To work collaboratively with HEIs and other Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews in relation to the quality of the clinical learning environment.

Management

1. In conjunction with the Emergency Department band 7s and Matron, provide effective orientation of staff, including welcome to the ward and early objective setting/follow-up.

2. When working in the department and in liaison with the shift manager ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix are in place to reflect the workload and needs of the patient.

3. In conjunction with the Emergency Department band 7s and Matron, support any investigation relating to the practice development of staff using the relevant Trust policies and in liaison with the senior nursing team, implement recommendations for action.

4. To manage own time to ensure balance between clinical and administrative activities.

5. To produce appropriate educational data or reports requested within Care Group or by the trust.

6. To assist in the process of recruitment, retention and selection of staff within the Emergency Department and contribute to other trust-wide employment initiatives of nursing staff for the trust.

7. In conjunction with colleagues, identify and implement educational strategies that support retention.

8. To actively participate in quality assurance strategies and audit.

9. In conjunction with Senior Nursing colleagues, identify and address the educational implications of audit findings and clinical incidents

10. To ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people- ensuring services are responsive to the needs of diverse groups.

11. To make an active contribution to clinical governance strategies, particularly in relation to producing and/or reviewing nurse-led clinical guidelines.

12. To be an active member of the Trusts non-medical education Forum.

1. To actively participate in maintaining own professional development, identifying own educational and clinical training needs with the Head of Practice and Education

2. To ensure own mandatory training certificates are current.

3. To participate in reflective practice, and maintain a personal learning portfolio.

4. To keep up to date with NMC requirements (Annual registration and revalidation), relevant specialist, Faculty & Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols.

Major Incident

To maintain and up to date knowledge of the trust Major Incident Policy and Department and Role specific plan

In the event of a major incident being declared and a call inn of staff being undertaken you should report to the Nurse in charge of A&E as soon as possible.

Undertake training and remain competent in the use of decontamination equipment for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) contaminated patients.

Undertake the Decontamination of patients from a CBRN incident as required.

Undertake training and maintain competence in scene safety and the use of Personal Protective Equipment used in the pre-hospital setting.

Be prepared to be sent to the scene of a serious incident / major incident to provide emergency care in the pre-hospital setting.
