About this role

Job summary

As a HCA, you will be involved primarily in the provision of a phlebotomy service, the management of laboratory samples for the practice patients, components of the annual patient health check, urinalysis, conducting ECG, diabetic foot checks, chaperoning patients, cleaning of instruments, maintenance of equipment, ordering of stock and re-stocking GPs and Nurses treatment rooms.

You will also be responsible for documenting your patient consultations on the information systems in General Practice and maintaining appropriate records to ensure continuity and quality of care for patients.

You will maintain your skills and competencies and undertake such training and development as may from time-to-time be required to maintain personal competency.

As a HCA, you will support the Practice by participating in all activities required by CQC registration.

Your role will require you to display flexibility with regard to rotas and working patterns.

Main duties of the job

To provide a phlebotomy service for patients. Urine testing, weight/height, blood pressure measurements, ECG recording and the delivery of flu vaccinations (with appropriate training). To be responsible for the correct maintenance and cleaning of surgical equipment, To be responsible for the processing and management of laboratory samples requested by the Clinicians with specific responsibility to ensure that the samples are correctly labelled, sent to the laboratory promptly and that data is entered onto the patients computer records. Demonstrate sensitive communication styles to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment. To act in such a manner as to support the patient at all times and be mindful of the need to reduce anxiety for the client/patient. Apply infection control measures within the Practice according to local and national guidelines. To act as a chaperone as required to GPs and Practice Nurses. To receive and document telephone messages as and when necessary and communicate to other members of the clinical team as appropriate. Participate in the completion and review of significant events and identify learning points. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and that sharps bins are replaced in accordance with the practice policy and conduct audits.

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services.

Undertake venepuncture Carry out ECGs as requested Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education Undertake annual patient health checks Carry out BMI checks as directed When trained, administer flu vaccinations Be an integral part of the general practice team Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives Act as a chaperone as required Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation Provide support during minor operations as required Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance Work within national and local protocols where these exist Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements Support the administrative team on an as-required basis Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all timesIn addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant has the following wider responsibilities:

Qualifications Essential

Essential Has completed the Care Certificate or equivalent qualification Phlebotomy certification

Desirable

Healthcare qualification or working towards gaining equivalent level Vaccination certification

Experience Essential

Experience of working in primary care Phlebotomy experience ECG recording experience Experience in performing annual health checks and diabetic foot checks Emis Web experience
