Job description Job responsibilities

The Neonatal Unit is designated as an LNU (Level 2) and has capacity of 23 cots with 19 of these funded currently. The workload is very varied, incorporating the management of very low birth weight babies.

Within the South London Operational Delivery Network, the Neonatal Unit at Lewisham operates in the context of the National Neonatal Service Specification, with exception reporting for babies less than 27 weeks gestation. The Neonatal Unit has a rota of Consultants, Registrars and Senior House Officers that is separate from the General Paediatric rota and there is no cross cover.

Last year, the unit had 456 admissions and we provided 818 Respiratory support days. The unit's preferred mode of ventilation is volume targeted ventilation, and we also use Biphasic CPAP and Vapotherm flow drivers. In the same period, we provided 645 Intensive Care days, 1972 High Dependency care days and 3178 Special Care days (BAPM 2011). We have facilities for cerebral function monitoring.

The Neonatal Unit at QEH is also designated as LNU and the Consultant rota consists of General Paediatric Consultants cross covering with separate Registrar and SHO cover. There is no cross cover across the 2 Neonatal units.

The monthly Neonatal Multidisciplinary and Governance meetings occur across the Lewisham and Woolwich sites by videoconferencing.

The two neonatal units together form the joint LGT Neonatal Service, with a joint vision of a seamless neonatal service. This vision is being achieved through close collaboration and joint working on projects such as clinical guidelines as well as cross-site working for newly recruited neonatal nursing staff.
