Job summary

Applications are invited for a fixed term Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, to join an established team providing specialised rehabilitation within the Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH) and Haywood Hospitals. The post is based at the Haywood Hospital, however the main duties are on the hyper-acute rehabilitation unit at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust as well as in outpatient clinics within the hostorganisation Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust (MPFT).

The consultant will be an integral member of the existing Rehabilitation Medicine team and will receive appropriate professional and peer support. Duties will comprise delivery of an inpatient specialised rehabilitation service on the established, UKROC-accredited level 1a inpatient ward (ARTU, Acute Trauma and Rehabilitation Unit) plus outpatient clinics in spasticity management.The consultants are supported by experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners, resident doctors, specialist nurses and a full multidisciplinary team.

The Rehabilitation Medicine department provides a full programme of educational team meetings, comprehensive on-site training and teaching. Close links with Keele University offer a range of opportunities for education and research.

Applicants require full GMC Registration and should be either on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

To work with colleagues in providing a comprehensive specialised Rehabilitation Medicine service across the two hospital sites.

To provide leadership and consultant cover to the inpatient specialist rehabilitation unit (ARTU) with shared responsibility for patients as named consultant.

In conjunction with colleagues, to provide comprehensive, specialist rehabilitation assessments of referred patients.

To support spasticity outpatient clinics including administration of botulinum toxin injections.

To take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

To provide cover for consultant colleagues in respect of periods of leave and abide by the leave policy.

To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients to contact the consultant when necessary.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications Essential

Full GMC registration MRCP / MRCS or equivalent Entry on GMC Specialist Register via : CCT or CESR

Desirable

Postgrad higher diploma, degree or qualification

Teaching, audit and research Essential

Experience of conducting clinical audit Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff, students and other disciplines Presentation at Regional or National meetings

Desirable

Evidence of having undertaken original research Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years

Experience Essential

Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCST in Rehab Medicine Competence in neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients

Desirable

Additional experience in trauma rehabilitation Additional experience in PDoC management
