Job summary

SACT Development Nurse - Band 5

We are currently seeking highly motivated nurse to join our nurse led unit as a SACT Development Nurse at Cathedral Day Unit and Mobile Cancer care Unit, Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Ethelbert Road, Canterbury, Kent CT1 3NG.

Whilst this is a challenging role and requires someone who is flexible and adaptable to changing environments it is very rewarding and offers great career progression.

No one day is the same and draws on and enables the post-holder to use a variety of skills and expertise. You must like working with people and want to make a real difference to our patients and families lives as well as make a positive contribution to the team and our service.

Main duties of the job

The opportunity to develop professionally with the aim of becoming a competent, knowledgeable SACT nurse The ability to give holistic care to the patient and their family, throughout their course of treatment The opportunity to work in the very specialised area of cancer services The ability to manage emotional issues relating to stages in the patient's journey The opportunity to be part of a team that works collaboratively with all care groups to develop a service for the care and management of patients with cancer.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care in which they are competent, without direct supervision, and may be required to supervise and support the training of both qualified and unqualified members of staff.

Qualifications and training Essential

Degree trained NMC registered nurse Continuous quality improvement Teaching and Assessing

Desirable

Has commenced or completed SACT passport Experience in a variety of acute clinical settings/experience as a band 5 in haemato-oncology setting SACT competent - UKONS SACT Passport or other SACT accredited course

Clinical skills and experience Essential

Cannulation and venepuncture skills IV Drug administration Care and management of central venous access devices Demonstrates effective communication skills through patient assessment Ability to assess, plan and evaluate patient care needs Venesection

Desirable

Ultra sound guided cannulation UKONS 24 hr telephone triage training Experience of working within a nurse led service/competency in nurse led clinics Enhanced/Advanced Communication skills training

Governance Essential

An understanding of local and national initiatives within cancer, radiotherapy and other treatments Working knowledge of COSHH Current understanding of key issues facing the NHS both locally and Nationally Risk reporting and escalation

Desirable

Clinical Governance Conflict resolution Uphold infection prevention and control strategies and contribute to practice audit

Personal/professional attributes Essential

Working collaboratively within the team and showing supportive style to the joint care of patients Problem solving approach to work Ability to prioritise workload effectively Maintain and engage with continuous professional development

Other requirements Essential

Drive for improvement to patient experience The expectation to work across the sites, WHH, KCH, QEQM as service requires To be aware of and adhere to the Trust's Vision, Mission and Values.

Desirable

Knowledge of the cancer pathway and NHS Cancer Plan Knowledge of cancer treatments including chemotherapy, Immunotherapy and targeted therapies
