Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist to apply for a 12 month secondment at HMP Birmingham.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of an Occupational Therapy (OT) Service within the wider health care team at HMP Birmingham. This is a developing service and is part of a drive to develop multi professional prison health care team aiming to increase the focus on recovery, individual assessment and interventions, and work to improve effective transitions within the prison service and into the community.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to develop the OT role within three main clinical areas; a 15 bed mental health wing, a 15 bed physical health wing and the Birmingham Recovery Team (BRT). There will be requirement to establish assessment and intervention programmes where appropriate, to develop and contribute to therapy programmes within the restraints of the environment and to explore how effective pathways can be established.

To work as an integrated member of the Prison Healthcare team providing an effectively administered and professionally competent Occupational Therapy service in response to service user need which is evidenced based and outcome measured

To manage a defined caseload of clients with complex physical and mental health needs, using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions within the prison setting. To maintain clinical records and appropriate data. Utilise the principles of recovery to lead on the delivery of therapeutic programmes of care. To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the service, holding responsibility for defined projects. To regularly supervise OT students on placement. To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust OT service.
