Job summary
This is a 10PA post designed primarily to support specialised oncologic plastic surgery and reconstruction at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of cancer.
This is a post where the successful candidate is expected to have a key role in the development of the expanding breast surgery service, head and neck surgery and skin cancer service to support the Plastic Surgery department. The appointee will be expected to be involved in all areas of oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, providing cover where necessary to the existing plastic surgeons and would be expected to share cover of the perineal reconstruction service.
Main duties of the job
Possession of the FRCS(Plast) and CCT, or an equivalent recognised accreditation in Plastic Surgery is essential, and interest in research and teaching is desirable. The candidates will have undergone recognised specialist training and have experience in plastic surgery oncology including microvascular reconstruction. Experience in perineal reconstruction is desirable. Candidates should show a broad range of publication and research activity and audits in broad range of plastic surgery topics including oncology.
Development of the Breast Service:The development of this service will rely heavily in forging links with breast surgery colleagues in the other hospitals in the region. The successful candidate may be expected to attend the Family History Clinics at the Nightingale Unit at South Manchester. The Christie is positioned to be one of the major breast reconstructive Units in the Northwest region.
Support of skin services:This service at the Christie has a well-established multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with skin cancer. This includes surgery, medical oncology and clinical oncology; enabling the delivery of the highest quality of care to patients. Parallel clinics with oncologists for discussion of complex skin tumours and nurse led support are provided

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high quality consultant led care across 7 days. This includes participation in planned weekend and weekday clinical activity to support safe, timely decision making and continuity of care for patients

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to The Medical establishment provides surgical beds on ward 10 which are allocated according to need. There is a surgical day case unit with facilities for preoperative assessment. The Anesthetic service is provided by the Department of Anesthesia at the Christie by the Clinical Director Dr K Lund and Dr S Al-Kadhimi supported via a SLA for anesthesia with The University Hospital South Manchester. All Consultant Surgeons and Anesthetists with sessional commitments to the Christie Hospital are members of the Directorate of Anesthetics, Theatres and Surgery and in the division of Clinical Support and Specialist Surgery.
A secretary within the Plastics team will be assigned to you. Currently there are 4 Secretaries and 2 admi support please a theatre scheduler. A shares Consultant office is available on appointment with It equipment and a trust laptop.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Job PlanningThe job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.
The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. The consultant job plan will include a combination of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) delivered across the 7day week.
Weekend working will consist of programmed clinical activities that are jobplanned, scheduled in advance, and reviewed annually through the job planning process.
The pattern and timing of weekday and weekend programmed activities will be agreed on appointment and subsequently reviewed through the annual job planning cycle, taking account of service needs and consultant preferences.
Essential Training/Mandatory TrainingTo ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.
