About this role

Job summary

You will provide specialist clinical expertise in managing staff and patients within the Cardiology department. Lead and coordinate the Cath Labs clinical, managerial and educational requirements, ensuring adequate systems are in place to support continuity 24/7.

Provide nursing leadership which empowers staff to deliver patient- centred, evidence based nursing care within a defined budget.

Maintain and monitor standards of care to ensure patient safety and quality of care.

Accountable for providing clinical and managerial leadership by leading by example to maintain visibility and accessibility to staff, patients and visitors, including undertaking direct clinical care of patients.

Provide direct educational and clinical support and education to the staff of the Cardiology department by developing and applying evidence-based practice.

Accountable for the line management of the team and deliver the delegated responsibilities of budget holder for the area.

Main duties of the job

As Cardiac Catheter Lab Manager develop and maintain key working relationships and deliver effective and empathetic communication with patients, relatives, carers and staff. Plan and organise the management of the efficient day-to-day running of the catheter lab. Use analytics to evaluate the catheter lab and make improvements. Accountable for patient care, treatment and therapy. Ensure Trust's policies are adhered to and development considered and implemented when appropriate. Responsible for finance, equipment and other resources within the department. Promotes supervision and leads by example. Ensure information resources are fully utilised and administrative duties are maintained.

Department Core Purpose

In the Cardiology department and its specialized Cardiac catheter labs patients are diagnosed and treated with heart conditions using minimally invasive, catheter-based techniques instead of open surgery. Providing critical, real-time imaging to detect blocked arteries, insert stents, manage arrhythmias, and placing devices like pacemakers to improve patient outcomes.

Job Purpose:

To be a member of a high functioning management team within Invasive Cardiology. Providing specialist clinical expertise in managing staff and patients within the Cardiology department.

To be accountable for leading and coordinating the clinical, managerial and educational requirements of a defined clinical area, ensuring adequate systems are in place to support continuity over a 24/7 period.

To provide nursing leadership within the Cath labs on a daily basis which empowers staff to deliver patient- centred, evidence based nursing care within a defined budget.

To maintain and monitor standards of care to ensure patient safety and quality of care, and to work with Matron to resolve failures of standards of care in all areas of the patient environment.

To be accountable for providing clinical and managerial leadership by leading by example to maintain visibility and accessibility to staff, patients and visitors, including undertaking direct clinical care of patients.

To provide direct educational and clinical support and education to the staff of the Cardiology department. To develop and apply evidence-based practice.

To be accountable for the line management of a team comprising registered practitioners, healthcare assistants and support workers and clerical staff as defined in the organisational chart.

To deliver the delegated responsibilities of 'budget holder' for the area.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communication and Key Working Relationships

Communicate with patients, relatives and carers. Taking into account their level of

understanding and any barriers that may have an impact on the individual receiving and

understanding the information. This may occur via various methods on a frequent daily

basis.

Communicate with patients, relatives and staff in an empathetic way, both face to face

or by telephone giving reassurance and developing co-operation in achieving good

outcomes on a frequent daily basis.

Referral to other services required to meet the needs of those patients in your

department.

Provide statements in response to formal complaints. Attempt to resolve with patients or relatives any verbal complaints, if necessary pass on to Matron or PALS services if they

cannot be resolved. Use the learning as a result of incidents and complaints and take

action in a positive way to develop or change practice.

Is visible and accessible to patients, visitors and users of the service.

To effectively chair meetings and report to Matron, Clinical service manager and

Service lead.

Planning and Organisation

To manage the day-to-day operational running of the service and support strategic

requirements of the clinical areas, with authority to make decisions as required.

Work strategically with the Service manager or Matron to meet Trust performance

targets, commissioner and government requirements.

To have accountability for ensuring that the department has the necessary COSHH

assessors, Manual Handling Assessors, First Aiders and Health and Safety Monitors

according to the levels set out in the Local Risk Management Policy.

Undertake Pregnant women Assessments and ensure that the Health and Safety

checks are carried out monthly, the COSHH assessment is updated yearly and all risk

assessments are reviewed annually.

In collaboration with the Matron, develop and implement action plans from external

audit (infection control, health and safety, patient environment action audits) and

discuss with the Matron progress against these action plans.

To have accountability for the teaching of core nursing skills on a one-to-one or group

basis and those relating to the speciality of the area, to qualified staff, support staff and

students on a daily basis.

Arrange and chair monthly meetings for all staff to keep them informed of

changes to policies/procedures and up to date with changes within the organisation,

including team brief. Ensure agreed actions are minuted and reviewed.

To be accountable for infection control and cleanliness standards according to National

and Trust policy and the National Standards of Cleanliness, for ensuring audits are

completed by required deadlines and in collaboration with the Matron, develop action

plans following external audit, implement these, reporting back to the Matron on

progress.

As per the Trust Drug policy ensure that self and staff read and follow the safe ordering, storage and administration of medicines.

Read and adhere to Trust policies and ensure that all staff are familiar and comply with Trust policies.

Keep records on their individual staff mandatory training records in respect of policies.

Work collaboratively with other Ward Managers/Matrons across the medical service group and the Trust.

Maintain records of staff training, annual leave and sickness.

Implement "best practice" in the management of the staff resource in accordance with

Improving Working Lives, Agenda for Change and other legislation as required.

Manage poor performance or conflict within the team or failure of staff to adhere to Trust policies, guidelines or standards in line with Trust Human Resources policies. Initiate and monitor action plans to address these. Inform matron of persistent problems.

Act corporately by attending Trust Team Brief and other relevant

meetings, contributing to debate and reporting back on discussions to staff in own area.

Analytics

Develop local methods by which patients and the public can become partners in health

care and routinely monitor patient satisfaction by collecting feedback from patients and

their visitors.

The post holder will ensure they are fully aware of all issues relating to Clinical

Governance, Quality Assurance, Clinical Effectiveness and Essence of Care and that

they carry out their duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards. This will include taking direct and indirect action to challenge others' practice where this puts maintenance of standards at risk.

Use local and national research guidelines and policies to establish a model of

evidence-based care, which is patient- centered.

Participate in working groups within the organisation and contribute by making

recommendations to policy formulation and changes to policies and report back to

Matron/Directorate team. Implement new policies/protocols by having a system in place

for cascading the information to all members of the ward team. May write local clinical

guidelines, provide training and implement them.

Monitor standards through Care essentials and ensure appropriate actions are taken

and shared through directorate governance.

Responsibility for Patient / Client Care, Treatment & Therapy

To have accountability for ensuring patient care within the department is organised and

documented in such a way that a safe and effective service is provided at all times.

Ensure that the Cath lab staff are utilised to their full potential and that they have

the necessary competencies to fulfil their role. This is done by ensuring all staff

undergoes an annual appraisal.

Devise, implement and maintain a system that ensures every staff member has

annual appraisal and personal development plan, setting objectives for those who

they directly appraise and give advice on objectives to those staff who will be

appraising junior staff.

Work with Matron to ensure that the development of nursing practice is in line with

the trust strategy.

In liaison with matron, responsible for the recruitment of staff and managing

sickness/absence, adhering to Trust Human Resources policies, to ensure a fair and

consistent approach when dealing with staff issues.

To take joint accountability for ensuring that risk assessments and Health & Safety

audits are undertaken in accordance with trust policy, including maintaining a local

risk register and developing, implementing and reviewing action plans arising from

the register.

To take joint accountability in ensuring that adverse incidents and near misses

(accidents, work-related ill-health, clinical incidents, equipment failures and deficits) are followed up according to Trust protocols and policies.

Qualifications Essential

Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience.Teaching and Assessing Qualification or equivalent Study.
