Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Theatre Manager to provide clinical and operational leadership within the Operating Theatres Department at The Princess Grace Hospital, London. This senior role offers the opportunity to lead a highly skilled multidisciplinary team within a modern, technologically advanced theatre environment delivering complex elective surgery across a wide range of specialities.

As Theatre Manager, you will be responsible for the day to day management of the department, ensuring safe, effective and high quality perioperative care. You will play a key role in workforce leadership, theatre utilisation, service development, clinical governance and CQC compliance, while working closely with Consultants and senior leaders to support innovation and continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

The Theatre Manager is responsible for providing visible clinical and operational leadership across the Operating Theatres Department, ensuring the delivery of safe, highquality and efficient perioperative care at all times.

The post holder will lead and develop a highly skilled multidisciplinary theatre team, promoting a culture of patient safety, professionalism, learning and continuous improvement. This includes responsibility for workforce planning, staff wellbeing, performance management and ongoing professional development.

You will oversee the effective utilisation of theatre lists, managing capacity, resource allocation and daily operational pressures to ensure services run smoothly and patients receive timely, highquality care. Working closely with Consultants, senior leaders and wider hospital teams, you will support service development, workforce transformation and the introduction of new technologies and models of care.

The role includes accountability for clinical governance, risk management, audit and compliance with CQC and internal standards, alongside responsibility for departmental budgets, equipment and resources. You will use performance data, quality indicators and patient feedback to drive improvement and deliver excellent patient experience.

As a senior leader, you will act as a positive role model, leading by example, building strong relationships and supporting the strategic objectives of the organisation.

The Theatre Manager will provide senior clinical and operational leadership within the Operating Theatres Department at The Princess Grace Hospital. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and highquality perioperative care, supported by excellent patient experience, strong clinical governance and efficient theatre utilisation.

Working closely with the Surgical Services Manager, Consultants and senior leaders, the Theatre Manager will lead the daytoday operational management of the theatres while contributing to strategic service development, workforce leadership and the introduction of new technologies and models of care.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical and Operational Leadership

Provide visible, professional leadership across the Operating Theatres Department, promoting a culture of safety, quality, learning and continuous improvement.Ensure theatres run efficiently and effectively, maintaining high clinical standards and positive patient outcomes.Act as a senior clinical role model, leading by example and supporting teams during periods of pressure or change.Workforce Leadership and Development

Lead, manage and develop a skilled multidisciplinary theatre workforce.Ensure appropriate staffing levels, skill mix and deployment to meet service demands.Support staff wellbeing, engagement, appraisal, performance management and professional development.Theatre Utilisation and Service Delivery

Oversee theatre list management, capacity planning and daily operational coordination.Work collaboratively with Consultants and scheduling teams to maximise theatre utilisation while maintaining patient safety and quality of care.Respond effectively to operational challenges and changing clinical priorities.Governance, Quality and Safety

Maintain accountability for clinical governance, risk management, audit and compliance with CQC and internal standards.Ensure evidencebased practice is embedded and reviewed across the department.Use quality indicators, incident reporting and patient feedback to drive service improvement.Service Development and Resources

Manage departmental budgets, equipment and resources responsibly and transparently.Support service development, innovation and the introduction of new surgical technologies.Contribute to strategic planning and implementation of organisational objectives.Communication and Collaboration

Build strong, effective working relationships with Consultants, senior leaders and multidisciplinary teams.Act as a key point of contact for theatrerelated operational and clinical matters.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered healthcare professional with a recognised qualification Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development

Desirable

Leadership or management qualification (or equivalent experience) Postregistration qualification in perioperative practice or a related specialty
