About this role

Strategy Director | Bristol OR London

£80k-£90k

Hybrid working - 2-3 days in office per week

We’re looking for an experienced Strategy Director to join an established specialist business and play a key role in its next stage of growth.

This is a senior, client-facing role for someone who is brilliant at getting to the heart of what a business is really trying to say, particularly when the subject matter is complex, technical or difficult to communicate.

A dedicated strategy background is essential for this role. We’re looking for someone who has held a specific strategy position and has substantial experience leading strategic communications work, developing narratives and messaging, and helping clients clarify what they need to say and how best to communicate it. This requires genuine depth of experience in strategic communications, rather than a broader marketing or communications background where strategy has been just one part of the role.

We’re looking for someone with significant, hands-on experience in a dedicated strategy role. You’ll have spent a substantial part of your career developing and leading strategy for clients, shaping strategic recommendations and using insight, research and commercial understanding to solve complex business and communications challenges. This is a senior strategy position, so we’re looking for genuine depth and breadth of strategic experience, rather than broader marketing or communications experience where strategy has been one part of the role.

The role can be based in either Bristol OR London, with occasional travel between the two offices for team days, client meetings and other key moments

You might have come from PR, communications, marketing communications, content, brand or a related strategic discipline, either agency or in-house. What matters is that you know how to interrogate a brief, ask the right questions and help a client work out what they should be saying about themselves, rather than simply taking what they think they should be saying at face value.

You’ll work with large, high-profile organisations and household-name brands, leading strategically important client work across corporate communications, corporate content and wider communications challenges.

We’re open to candidates with either B2B or B2C experience. What’s important is your ability to understand a complex business, find the story and make it relevant to the people who need to hear it.

You and your team will use research, stakeholder interviews, audience insight, workshops and judgement to bring clarity to complex information. Be able to take a mass of detail, competing opinions and sometimes complicated subject matter and turn it into something clear, compelling and easy to understand.

Your work will span areas such as positioning, narrative, messaging and content strategy, helping clients find the right story and then working with others to bring that thinking to life.

This isn’t just about delivering great strategy yourself. A big part of the role will be building strategic capability across the business, developing approaches and methodologies, sharing your thinking and, importantly, coaching and upskilling others so the wider team becomes stronger strategically.

There’s a commercial side too. You’ll help identify opportunities within existing client relationships, take conversations further upstream and contribute to new business, using your strategic expertise to help win and grow client work.

We’re looking for someone who is curious, commercially aware and confident enough to challenge, with excellent client skills and a natural ability to turn complexity into clarity. You’ll be comfortable working with senior stakeholders, presenting your thinking and leading conversations where there isn’t necessarily an obvious answer.

You’ll need experience within PR, communications, marketing communications, content, brand or a related strategic discipline, from either agency or in-house.

If you’re someone who enjoys figuring things out, challenging the obvious answer, helping clients find what they really need to say and making the people around you better, this could be a really interesting opportunity.

* This is a permanent, full-time role with a hybrid working pattern, including two days a week in the office. We’re looking for someone who wants to become part of the team for the long term, rather than a freelance or interim appointment
