Summary We are looking for a Technical Demonstrator for the Mill at Quarry Bank, Styal. Quarry Bank is a unique place to work as one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites, situated just outside Manchester. Today, visitors can step back in time with a tour of the Mill, Quarry Bank House, Apprentice House and workers cottage, as well as strolling through the historic gardens, woodland and Styal Village. It’s a friendly team of full and part-time staff and over 400 volunteers working together on the property. Internally, you will be known as a 'Technical Demonstrator (Quarry Bank)'.

Salary: £13.25 per hour

Contract Duration: Permanent

Working Hours: 1033 hours per year. This role is based on annualised hours, where the?amount?of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year.?

Working Pattern: You will work every other weekend and 2/3 weekdays in the summer period, and 2 days per week in the winter period.

What it's like to work here You will be joining a team of 11 Technical Demonstrators, working with a daily team of 5. The role combines running the textile machinery with interacting with the visitors, tour and school groups.

This former cotton mill was built in 1784 and is one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites. The busy estate hosts many schools programmes and events, which help bring Quarry Bank’s fascinating story to life. New areas of the estate will shortly open to the public, creating additional project-based roles. This is an exciting opportunity to work in fast growing location and the team pride themselves on being dynamic, highly motivated and passionate people.

Click here for more information about this location What you'll be doing You will be describing what it was like to work in the mill during the 18th and 19th centuries for both adults and children, as well as explaining how the machines processes the cotton from bale to thread to cloth. You will also be contributing to the manufacturing of cloth on our historic machinery which is sold in our shop! Our cloth is unique to Quarry Bank and sets us apart from other historical places of interest.

You will be responsible for conservation cleaning of the textile machines, and over time you will learn to run all the textile machinery, with training provided by the more experienced team members. This training will start in the hand spinning and weaving area, where you will learn to spin on a spinning wheel and weave on our hand looms.

Personal development is important, which includes furthering your knowledge of the machinery and the history of Quarry Bank, developing towards training others and supporting the Technical volunteers and Mill entrance volunteers.
