Hiring Unit: Department of Geography Course: Topic: History and Philosophy of Geographical Thought – GEOG 407 (3 credits) Course description: What is geography, what does it mean to study geography, and what does it mean to be a geographer? This course traces the development of geography as a discipline, from early cartography and Enlightenment exploration through the quantitative revolution, the critical turn, and the emergence of GIS and GeoAI. In this course, we engage with geography's complex entanglements with empire, war, urbanism, and political economy, while grappling with core philosophical questions about space, place, mobility, and knowledge production. Drawing on diverse thinkers from across time and place, students will be asked not only to understand what geographers have studied, but to reflect critically on how the discipline's history has shaped – and continues to shape – the questions it is capable of asking. Job Description: Responsibilities include teaching, course management, developing exam materials, grading, and supervising TA’s (note that TA support will be based on enrolment in the class). Assessments may be adapted to the instructor’s pedagogical approach, including the design of course assignments, quizzes, and final examination. Teaching Qualification Requirements: We seek an instructor with a PhD or other advanced degree in Geography who has previously taught or has extensive knowledge of the history of geographic thought. Schedule: Lecture: WF 08:35 am-09:55 am MAASS 328
