About this role
Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact. Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond. About Us: SBM Offshore is a global leader in deepwater ocean infrastructure, delivering floating production solutions across the full asset lifecycle—from design and construction to installation and operation. Supported by a global team of more than 8,000 professionals, the Company operates a long-term, asset-backed business model that delivers high-availability assets and predictable cash flows. SBM Offshore combines engineering expertise, operational reliability, and selective innovation to support safe, efficient, and lower-carbon energy production, while extending its capabilities into new opportunities across the blue economy. Purpose The MPF hull is characterized by a long roll natural period, above 20 s. Consequently, second-order wave excitation may significantly contribute to its roll response and must be properly evaluated when determining design motions and accelerations and when performing mooring analyses. Hydrodynamic databases derived using potential-flow software such as Hydrostar are a prerequisite for these analyses. However, potential-flow theory does not directly account for viscous roll damping. This contribution is therefore generally represented by additional linear or quadratic damping terms. The focus of the internship will be on implementing quadratic roll damping in second-order motion calculations. Its influence on first-order motions and loads, as well as on second-order motions and loads in the other degrees of freedom, will also be investigated where relevant. The purpose of the internship is to define and implement the most appropriate methodology, taking into consideration: The current state of the art Existing formulations and linearization methods Model test findings and available reference data Practicality to deploy method on projects and impact on design values. Responsibilities The internship will cover three main steps: Understand the scope and prepare a literature review SBM engineering practices Literature on the topic. Become familiar with Hydrostar and the relevant motion-analysis tools The objective will be to define and implement a methodology ensuring: Appropriate and consistent modelling of quadratic roll damping in first- and second-order motion calculations. Numerically stable and converged second-order roll-response calculations. Good agreement between numerical predictions and available basin-test results A robust and practical methodology for project Apply the method on a past project to assess impact overall On motion calibration / analyses (design accelerations) Mooring analyses (as appropriate) Your Role Get a good understanding of the methods used. Perform numerical analyses to find best modelling techniques. Interpret results. Present conclusions to Hydrodynamics department. What it will bring to you: Exposure to engineering methods used in design Use of industry-recognized software (Hydrostar, Orcaflex) Global picture including how to analyze model test results, how to calibrate numerical model vs model tests, how to perform radiation-diffraction analyses, how outcome is used for motion analyses and mooring analyses. Solid theoretical and practical background on hydrodynamics whichever field of applications (offshore, renewables …). Education Engineering schools, 2nd or 3rd year Prior exposure to diffraction analysis is a plus Programming in Python (script to handle large data, to cluster data) is required GENERAL INFORMATION SBM Offshore N.V. is a listed holding company that is headquartered in Amsterdam.
