About this role
Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact. Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond. About Us: SBM Offshore is a global leader in deepwater ocean infrastructure, delivering floating production solutions across the full asset lifecycle—from design and construction to installation and operation. Supported by a global team of more than 8,000 professionals, the Company operates a long-term, asset-backed business model that delivers high-availability assets and predictable cash flows. SBM Offshore combines engineering expertise, operational reliability, and selective innovation to support safe, efficient, and lower-carbon energy production, while extending its capabilities into new opportunities across the blue economy. Purpose Topic : Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) on Mooring Lines 5 to 6 months internships based in Monaco Introduction: The main types of mooring systems are Single Point Mooring (vessel weathervanes about a fixed part, such as a turret) or Spread Mooring (fixed vessel heading, unit is generally moored by 4 bundles of mooring lines, one per corner). See figures below. In both cases, mooring lines are exposed to environmental loading from waves, wind and current throughout the service life. Currents acting on long, slender mooring components can generate vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). These oscillations may alter mooring line dynamics, increase local curvature or stress ranges, and contribute to fatigue damage. The significance of the response depends on the mooring line configuration, component type, current profile, structural properties, boundary conditions and interaction with the global motion of the floating unit. The internship will develop a practical and technically justified approach for assessing VIV on mooring lines, from rules interpretation and screening criteria to numerical modelling and fatigue evaluation. The work will focus on developing a method that can be applied consistently and efficiently in engineering projects. Responsibilities Description The internship will cover the following activities: Review and summarise the requirements and recommended practices from ABS, BV and DNV applicable to VIV on mooring lines. Develop a physical understanding of VIV including vortex shedding, lock-in of the mooring line response, damping and mode participation. Establish dimensionless parameters and screening indicators suitable for mooring components. Assess VIV on at least one representative spread-moored project: Compare modelling and methodology options and investigate key parameters such as current intensity and direction, mooring line pretension, diameter and other relevant parameters. Post-process response quantities, derive stress or tension ranges as appropriate, perform cycle counting, and evaluate the incremental fatigue contribution associated with VIV. Document modelling assumptions, limitations and quality checks. If time allows, assess VIV on a turret-moored project. Develop a decision framework for selecting an appropriate VIV assessment methodology that could be implemented efficiently on projects. Your Role Hands-on exposure to hydrodynamic and mooring system design methods used on offshore project Develop a sound understanding of VIV physics and mooring-system behaviour Perform numerical analyses to identify best modelling techniques. Interpret results. Present conclusions and recommendations to Hydrodynamics department. What it will bring to you: Exposure to engineering methods used in mooring design Use of industry-recognized software (OrcaFlex and Shear 7) Solid theoretical and practical background on mooring whichever field of applications (offshore, renewables …). Education Second or third-year engineering student Prior exposure to offshore engineering or mooring systems would be an advantage Programming in Python is required GENERAL INFORMATION SBM Offshore N.V. is a listed holding company that is headquartered in Amsterdam.
