About this role

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to join the SLT team within our band 6 rotations. The rotations include Acute Medicine/ Senior health, Neurocardiac/ Major Trauma, Community neuro, Outpatients, Stroke, Neurorehabilitation and Acute Paediatrics.

The postholder will be part of a progressive and supportive speech and language team consisting of 30+ SLTs across a range of specialities. Great emphasis is placed on supervision and professional development.

Experience working with adults with communication and swallowing impairments is essential as is dysphagia training.

Working with families is an important part of the work. Excellent communication skills are essential and an interest in the process as well as the outcomes of rehabilitation is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will independently manage, dependant on the specific rotation, an Adult or paediatric caseload and provide specialist SLT knowledge, skills, and expertise to colleagues and support the SLT service as a whole. There will be opportunity to participate in weekly instrumental assessment clinics.

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner providing specialist Speech and Language Therapy services to adult/paediatric patients/clients with a variety of needs including Aphasia, Complex needs, Dysphagia, Feeding difficulties, and Cognitive communication difficulties. A significant proportion of these clients will have English as an additional language (EAL).

They will work alongside adult/ paediatric medical, surgical and multidisciplinary staff to ensure highly specialist therapy programs and care plans are in place for the patients/clients under their care.

The post holder will be expected to lead collaborative working with patients / clients, carers and with colleagues internally and externally planning and delivering services.

The post holder will also assist with the work of student placements, provide guidance for speech and language therapy assistants and provide clinical support to other therapists/staff on SLT issues

As part of the Adult rotation specialities, the post holder will be required to work as part of the weekend working rota.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications Essential

Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practice Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist Evidence of completion of specialist short courses and self directed study

Experience Essential

Relevant experience as a Speech & Language Therapist Working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level including clinical training, clinical experience with an adult caseload in a previous job or clinical placement.

Knowledge and Skills Essential

Well established knowledge of a range of assessment tools relevant to specific client group with speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties Well established knowledge of a range of therapeutic and management approaches to relevant to client group Well established knowledge of dysphagia assessment and management Knowledge of the use of videofluoroscopy Established knowledge of neuroanatomy and physiology as relevant to this post Negotiation and problem solving skills Demonstrates excellent concentration, analytical and reflection skills Good interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills Good presentation skills, both written and verbal Good organisational and prioritisation skills Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically Demonstrates ability to be a good team member Awareness of national policies and procedures (relevant to the specialist client group) Competent with IT skills Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance and the implications for SLT Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group) Knowledge of standards of record keeping Good written and spoken English
