About this role

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Doctor to join a large, friendly and proactive Palliative Medicine Department at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.

The post is less than full time (0.68 WTE) with some weekend working on Saturday and Sunday 9am to 3pm.

You will join a team of consultants and specialists based between Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and Queens Hospital Burton (QHB), who also provide services at the associated community Hospitals.

There is ample opportunity to develop both your clinical and non-clinical skills through protected study time, education meetings, teaching experience and audit. If you are interested in Palliative Medicine as a career or want to develop your palliative care skills within a portfolio career, this post will widen your experience and support your ongoing development.

The Specialist Palliative Care team at UHDB provides support to patients and families in a variety of settings. It comprises the 20-bed specialist palliative care in-patient unit, Nightingale Macmillan Unit (NMU); Ward 2, a 14-bed general palliative care ward providing end of life care at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital in Derby; Hospital Palliative Care Team covering RDH and QHB; Community Palliative Care Team and an End of Life Care Facilitator Team.

The successful candidate will be based across sites and and will provide clinical input across the outpatient clinics and advisory services.

Main duties of the job

Work with the wider Palliative Medicine multi-disciplinary team to support outpatients and inpatients with symptom control, decision making for treatments and onward planning for discharge.

Responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge

Conduct outpatient clinics for Palliative Medicine patients.

To work with the Community Palliative Care Team, supporting with coordinating care for complex patients, and completing home visits where necessary.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and comply with requirements for appraisal and revalidation.

Occasional cross-cover of HPCT service at Queens Hospital BurtonThe post-holder will need to undertake some weekend working on the Nightingale Macmillan Unit (09:00-15:00 Saturday and Sunday).

Person Specification

Qualifications and Eligibility Essential

MBBS / MBChB or equivalent Life Support Qualifications (BLS and AED) Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application A full valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle (for working within the Community Palliative Care Team)

Desirable

Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College Experience in Palliative Medicine or a specialty including palliative care

Language and Communication Skills Essential

Experience of formal presentations Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties

Clinical Knowledge and Skills Essential

Evidence of independent clinical practice Up to date clinical knowledge in Palliative Medicine and evidence of an understanding of its application Experienced in making clinical decisions and managing risk Ability to organise and manage clinical care e.g. outpatients Ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers, professional colleagues and other staff Completed a minimum of 12 years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) - Candidates must meet this eligibility for the grade as per National Terms and Conditions. Teaching Experience, Audit and Research Essential

Ability to and experience of teaching clinical skills Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP) Ability to assess and apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty Evidence of ability to supervise audit

Desirable

Teaching course or qualification Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates Attended a recognised teaching training course Evidence of leadership skills
