About this role

Job summary

The post holder will work as a senior autonomous Sexual Health Nurse, providing high-quality, evidence-based sexual and reproductive healthcare within HMP Peterborough across both the male and female establishments.

The post holder will undertake comprehensive sexual health assessment, clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of people presenting with symptomatic and asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV-related concerns and other genitourinary conditions, working within their professional competence and in accordance with national guidance, local pathways and Trust policies.

Appointment to this role is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, including verification against the Children's Barred List. The successful applicant must be cleared before commencement of employment

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work autonomously as an experienced sexual health practitioner, delivering comprehensive, evidence-based sexual and reproductive healthcare within HMP Peterborough. Responsibilities include assessment, examination, investigation, diagnosis and management of STIs and genitourinary conditions; medicines management and prescribing within competence; HIV prevention, testing and referral; contraception and reproductive healthcare where appropriately qualified; partner notification; results management, follow-up and clinical escalation.

The role provides senior clinical leadership and specialist advice, supporting multidisciplinary working, complex clinical decision-making and continuity of care. The post holder will support staff supervision, teaching, mentoring and competency development.

Responsibilities include clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development, contributing to clinical pathways, policies, PGDs, incident learning and risk management. The post holder will promote safeguarding, trauma-informed care, health promotion, STI/BBV testing and prevention, and support equitable access and continuity of treatment following transfer or release.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered Nurse with current UK NMC registration. Relevant post-registration sexual health/GUM training with demonstrated clinical competence.

Desirable

Independent/Supplementary Prescriber qualification. Relevant FSRH and/or STIF qualification or recognised equivalent competencies. Contraception qualifications and competencies, including LARC where applicable. Cervical screening/cytology qualification and current competence. Leadership or management qualification.

Clinical Experience Essential

Recent substantive sexual health experience at Band 6 level or equivalent senior clinical responsibility, including autonomous management of symptomatic and asymptomatic STI presentations. Demonstrated experience of autonomous sexual health assessment, clinical decision-making, treatment, results management, follow-up and appropriate referral or escalation. Experience of working within relevant medicines management frameworks, including PGDs and/or independent prescribing within professional competence. Experience of contributing to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement or service development. Knowledge and clinical experience of HIV prevention, testing and appropriate referral pathways.

Desirable

Previous experience working within prison, secure or custodial healthcare. Evidence of teaching, mentoring, clinical supervision or supporting the development of other staff. Experience of trauma-informed care and/or motivational interviewing or behaviour-change interventions. Evidence of formal clinical leadership experience.
