About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a registered Occupational Therapist with recent clinical experience and a passion for supporting the development of future practitioners. Our innovative courses are recognised by the HCPC and RCOT for academic quality, innovation and close partnerships to healthcare and the wider sectors in which our graduates work. This role would suit an experienced clinician seeking to move into academia, or an early-career academic wishing to contribute to the development of an innovative Occupational Therapy programme.

Main duties of the job

The Lecturer in Occupational Therapy will contribute to the delivery, development and quality enhancement of the MSc Occupational Therapy programme within the School of Nursing and Allied Health. The postholder will provide high-quality, evidence-informed teaching, assessment and academic support to students, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values required for contemporary occupational therapy practice.

Working collaboratively with academic colleagues, practice partners and external stakeholders, the postholder will support the delivery of an innovative curriculum that reflects the evolving healthcare landscape, including community-based practice, digital health, interprofessional working and preventative approaches to health and wellbeing. The Lecturer will contribute to curriculum development, student recruitment, practice learning experiences, and scholarly activity, while ensuring that programme delivery meets the professional and regulatory requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).

The successful candidate will bring contemporary occupational therapy expertise, ideally with a background in mental health and/or child health service and will play an active role in preparing graduates who are equipped to meet the needs of individuals, families and communities across diverse health and social care settings.

Principal Accountabilities:

As a Lecturer in the department of the School of Nursing and Allied Health, the working year will be divided between teaching, placement support, teaching-related administration, assessment and research in such proportions as may be decided by the Head of School / Executive Dean, after appropriate consultation, in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Academic staff. Placement support will involve working with external health and care providers and ensuring excellent learning from relevant clinical or care environments.

Learning and Teaching

Support the delivery of teaching material - deliver either across a range of modules within a subject area and/or across developing areas within the department.Deliver lectures and/or lead seminar groups using appropriate teaching methods, helping to identify areas where current provision needs revision or improvement.Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques.Support and liaise with clinical practice partners in developing placement opportunities and supporting student work-related learning.Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques and engage with the Simulated Based Education development, as relevant.Assist with the development of the design and delivery of modules and assessment methods, working closely with colleagues on the implementation of assessment procedures, participating in the examination/assessment process.Set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide effective and timely feedback to students.Assist with the supervision of students projects, fieldwork and placements.Use time outside of teaching hours to prepare well-constructed, varied teaching sessions, ensuring that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning outcomes.Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.Provide timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using all forms of communication/ media.Embrace the importance and value of engaging in the task of education and learning together with students at all academic levels to ensure an outstanding learning experience.Work in partnership with students to enable them to become independent learners and researchers.Deliver high quality, effective and interactive teaching using a range of methods including face to face, blended and remote delivery if necessary.Research, scholarly and income generating activities

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Current or recent professional experience as a registered Occupational Therapist, ideally in the UK. Previous teaching/training experience, able to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning. Experience of supporting, supervising or mentoring students, learners or staff within a practice environment. Able to identify the need for developing the content or structure of the subject area / module and make proposals on how this should be achieved.

Desirable

Experience of working within occupational therapy practice settings, ideally within mental health and/or children and young people's services. Research portfolio aligned with subject area.

Skills Essential

Foster creative approaches when responding to teaching, learning and scholarship challenges and contribute to the development of a culture of innovation and enterprise. Able to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn. Excellent teaching methods and presentation skills, supporting blended learning for students with effective interpersonal skills. Able to deliver high quality, effective and interactive teaching and will be willing to use a range of methods including face-to-face, blended and remote delivery if necessary. Evidence of sound administrative, organisational and prioritisation skills. Ability to develop areas of interest in the subject area. Competent digital skills and the ability to utilise educational technologies to enhance learning including Moodle or similar and use it to support creative and informative learning sessions.

Qualifications Essential

Relevant Honours degree or MSc in Occupational Therapy. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Occupational Therapist. Qualified Teacher Status / HE teaching qualification / willingness to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice in HE within an agreed timeframe. Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, Health, Education or a related discipline, or be actively working towards completion of a Master's qualification. Understanding of the HCPC Standards of Education and Training, Standards of Proficiency and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) professional standards. Member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). Awareness of current developments in healthcare, including preventative approaches, digital healthcare, interprofessional working and community-based service delivery.

Desirable

Working towards a Doctorate. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
