Role highlights Great opportunity to shape user interfaces for the SKA-Low telescope Apply your JavaScript and React expertise to world-class science Join a global software team building next-generation infrastructure! About CSIRO As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge. Visit CSIRO.au for more information. The opportunity The SKA-Low project is part of the SKA Observatory’s global mission to build the world’s largest and most advanced radio telescope. In Australia, SKA-Low is being developed on Wajarri Yamaji Country in remote Western Australia, combining high-performance computing, advanced networking and cutting-edge software systems to process vast volumes of scientific data. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to globally significant, next-generation scientific infrastructure. The Computing and Software Group delivers the core platforms and systems that underpin SKA-Low operations. These include integrated control systems managing millions of variables, high-performance data processing capabilities, science management systems, and large-scale distributed networks operating at extraordinary speeds. As the Web/UI Developer, you will develop and support user interfaces used to operate the SKA-Low telescope. You will create intuitive, high-quality UI components that support telescope monitoring and control, the planning and monitoring of observations, and the visualisation of scientific data products. Working primarily with JavaScript and front-end frameworks such as React and NextJS, you will also integrate user interfaces with broader telescope systems using technologies such as GraphQL. You will collaborate with operations and commissioning users to understand their requirements and translate them into practical, usable solutions. As part of a globally distributed software team, you will contribute across the development lifecycle using modern engineering practices, including version control, continuous integration and delivery, automated testing, documentation and code quality processes. You will work within an agile delivery environment as the project progresses from construction towards long-term telescope operations. You will bring experience in modern Web/UI development, together with strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with users and multidisciplinary technical teams. Experience applying user experience principles, working with GNU/Linux platforms, or using virtualisation, containerisation and orchestration technologies will be highly regarded. If you are passionate about creating high-quality digital experiences and would like to apply your software development expertise to one of the world’s most ambitious science and engineering projects, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. Your high-level duties will include: Developing user interface components in Front-End technologies such as JavaScript and React, in accordance with the SKA quality framework and continuous integration processes working alongside users from Operations and Commissioning team. Integrating user interface modules with other system components, using technologies such as GraphQL. Participating in the activities of the Low Agile Release Train (Low ART) as a member of a distributed software team. Contributing to the maintenance and operations of telescope and observatory user interfaces, as part of a local software engineering team. Communicating openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of SKAO and CSIRO’s reputation.
