Job summary

We are seeking an organised, proactive, and detail-oriented Referral Management & Safety Netting Coordinator to join our Team. This vital role supports clinicians in managing patient referrals safely, efficiently, and within required timescales, ensuring patients receive timely access to secondary care services.

The successful candidate will play a key role in monitoring referrals, supporting urgent cancer pathways, maintaining robust safety-netting processes, and ensuring no referral is lost or delayed. Working closely with clinicians, operational teams, hospitals, and patients, you will contribute directly to patient safety, service quality, and compliance with NHS standards.

Main duties of the job

Process clinician-generated referrals accurately and efficiently within agreed timescales.Manage routine, urgent, and specialist referrals using NHS referral systems, including e-RS.Ensure referrals contain complete clinical information and supporting documentation.Monitor referral progress and confirm receipt by secondary care providers.Follow up outstanding referral actions to ensure continuity of patient carePrioritise and oversee all Two Week Wait (2WW) suspected cancer referrals.Monitor referral acknowledgements, booking outcomes, and appointment attendance.Escalate delays, rejections, or concerns promptly to the relevant clinician or manager.Maintain accurate records and reports relating to cancer pathway activity.Support organisational compliance with national cancer referral standards.

This is a pivotal role supporting the safe and effective management of patient referrals across the practice, ensuring timely access to secondary care services and maintaining robust patient safety processes. The successful candidate will work closely with clinicians, operational teams, hospitals, and patients to ensure referrals are processed accurately, monitored effectively, and escalated appropriately where concerns arise.

Key ResponsibilitiesReferral Management

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

- Experience working in a healthcare administrative or medical secretarial role. - Knowledge of NHS referral processes and patient pathways. - Experience of managing high-volume administrative workloads.

Desirable

- Previous experience within a GP practice environment. - Experience using NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). - Experience managing referral tracking and safety-netting systems. - Experience supporting cancer pathways and 2WW referrals. - Audio typing experience.
