Job summary

St Mawes is a 32-bedded surgical ward that cares for patients undergoing emergency or elective surgery both pre and post-operatively.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Deputy Sister / Charge Nurse to join our well established team.

An often busy ward, working as part of a team is critical. We have a dynamic and forward thinking multidisciplinary team that you will be an active member of. You will be expected to lead the team, provide clinical support, guidance and supervision on a daily basis. You will be given training opportunities to build your surgical knowledge and skills.

This role has been approved for advertising; however, it is also being assessed as a suitable alternative employment opportunity. As a result, the vacancy may be withdrawn or there may be a delay before shortlisting can begin.

Main duties of the job

To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to provide a high standard of holistic patient centred care.

Ability to promote patient centred care and establish good relationships with patients and carers

To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.

To work collaboratively with recovery and the surgical wards to promoted excellent patient care.

To be a highly competent, knowledgeable and visible practitioner setting the highest standards of care and ensuring the provision of appropriate, evidence-based care for all patients/clients.

To work with colleagues across the organisation to deliver the ambitions of the Trust's Strategic Plan and be able to explain what it is.

To engage with collaborative working across theatres, recovery and the surgical team to ensure the patient receive the appropriate care and follow the pathway for elective surgery patients.

To be able to take charge of the ward and in the absence of a Matron or Band 7 create flow through the unit to ensure timely admissions and discharges

To act as role model and expert practitioner.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Level 1 Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration Qualified or commitment to being an Assessor / Mentor.

Desirable

Possession of a degree or in the process of obtaining

Experience Essential

Substantial experience working with in an acute surgical setting

Desirable

Previous ward leadership experience Experience in leading a team in the absence of senior staff

Practical skills Essential

Ability to plan, prioritize and evaluate nursing care in accordance with NMC Principles Good record keeping skills Ability to work as part of an effective team

Desirable

Ability to de-escalate and resolve conflict
