Job summary
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an experienced and motivated Locum Consultant Surgeon in Endocrine and General Surgery to join our established Endocrine Surgery team. The team are part of the GI Services Division within the Surgery & Cancer Board.
This is a key service-facing role with two clear and high-impact priorities:o Reducing General Surgery waiting times through the delivery of dedicated general surgery operating lists, ando Supporting the Endocrine Surgery service to bridge activity delivery between 40-52 weeks, ensuring compliance with national standards and improving patient access.
Applicants must hold full GMC registration and be on (or within six months of entry to) the Specialist Register in General Surgery. Independent laparoscopic practice, broad general surgery capability and a commitment to teamwork and education are essential.

Main duties of the job
As part of one of the UK's most complex and high-performing NHS trusts, the successful post-holder will play a pivotal role in addressing surgical backlogs and maintaining safe, effective and timely care for patients. A significant proportion of the job plan will be focused on undertaking general surgery theatre lists, contributing directly to RTT recovery and the clearance of long-wait patients (>18 weeks).
In parallel, the post-holder will work closely with consultant colleagues in Endocrine Surgery, providing weekday theatre backfill and additional operating capacity to support delivery of endocrine surgical activity within the 40-52 week window. Joint operating and collaborative working are encouraged, and the role is central to sustaining resilience and continuity within the endocrine surgery service.
The post-holder will be embedded within a multidisciplinary, academically-led department and will be expected to uphold the highest standards of clinical governance, patient safety and quality improvement. There will be opportunities to contribute to teaching and supervision of surgical trainees, audit activity, and broader departmental development.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications Essential
Eligible of full UK GMC Registration On GMC Specialist List in general Surgery or within six months of attaining Knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS Understanding of current changes in the management and organisational structures of the NHS. Ability to work within these parameters. Knowledge and understanding of principles of resource and budgetary management.
Desirable
Proven ability to carry out high quality original research leading to publication in peer reviewed MD/PhD
Experience Essential
Proven training in colorectal and General Surgery Clinical audit experience Experience of and interest in teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels
Desirable
Experience of working within an colorectal MDT setting Previous formal Teaching experience showing leadership skills
Skills and Abilities Essential
Proficient in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Fully trained in General Surgery and able to manage common general surgical emergencies and Proficient and independent in all colorectal surgery procedures, both open and laparoscopic Proven ability to teach in clinical settings
Desirable
Surgical skills in pelvic and complex GI surgery Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
Communication Essential
Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; Ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate. Ability to see patients as people, ability to empathise and work co-operatively with others.
