We are inviting applications to recruit one substantive consultant in Neonatology. They will bejoining a pro-active team with an excellent clinical reputation in providing a range of Neonatalservices. The consultant team delivers a high-quality service and use their knowledge andexperience to lead and influence the development of neonatal services at the Royal LondonHospital.We are looking for applicants who can lead and develop innovative models of care whichbenefit the infants and their family. We anticipate that the successful applicants to be part of astrong team and complement the team in delivering high quality care to an extremelyvulnerable group of patients and their families.The post is primarily based on the NICU at Royal London with occasional cross cover of theNeonatal Transfer service. The pan London Neonatal Transfer Service is based at the RoyalLondon providing both emergency and elective transfers within London and the South East.You will be employed by Barts Health NHS Trust and will be based at The Royal LondonHospital and will be working towards ten programmed activities.

Main duties of the job

The aim of this post is to continue to provide the highest standard of care for newborn babies at theRoyal London Hospital. It combines clinical expertise and leadership with managerial andprofessional responsibilities. The duties will be exclusively neonatal and include the neonatalmedical and surgical service, transitional care unit and postnatal wards and labour ward withoccasional cross-cover for the London regional Neonatal Transport Service. The post holder isexpected to provide supervision and training for junior medical, nursing and other staff.The work pattern is spread across a 10-week rolling rota and will include a combination of daytimeattending duties and night on calls, including weekends.The post holder will have clinical accountability for the day-to-day management of all newbornbabies at the Royal London Hospital. The post holder will practice at an advanced leveldemonstrating a high level of autonomy and clinical decision-making. They will work as a highlyspecialised member of the multi-professional team to ensure that the clinical needs of the patientand families are always met.

Job description Job responsibilities

1. The administration and development of neonatal intensive, high dependency and special care on the Royal London Hospital NICU as well as transitional care on the postnatal wards.2. Supervision, training and support of junior medical staff in the care of sick babies on the neonatal unit and postnatal wards, and in the resuscitation and stabilisation of babies on labour ward and in theatres.3. Supporting the neonatal surgical service.

4. Carrying out outpatient clinics as per weekly rota. One of these would be the general neonatal follow-up clinic, and the other could be a special interest clinic. A clinic for chronic respiratory problems is currently being provided by Dr C May and Dr Warrick; a neurodevelopmental follow-up clinic by Prof Shah, Dr Kage and Dr Yong; Sharing the latteror establishing a further complementary specialist follow-up clinic would be welcome.5. Available to offer advice to referring paediatricians and neonatologists, and if required, occasionally visit babies in outlying units particularly in the context of hospitals within the network.6. Being available to advise local GPs, Health Visitors and midwives in matters of baby care.7. Supporting staff and parents.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge Essential

Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) or equivalent Full GMC registration Registration on the Specialist Register and CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) equivalent The applicant should be able to produce evidence that he/she is within 6 months of CCT date and is expected to achieve a Completion Certificate of Training Able to demonstrate recent experience and practice in neonatal medicine as a sub-specialist MD, MSc, PhD or equivalent higher degree

Wide neonatal experience including recent NICU experience Advanced clinical skills in neonatal medicine Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching Evidence of leadership skills Valid BLS and NLS training Experience of transporting sick and unstable neonates
