An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work as part of a specialised community mental health team. The team focuses on holistic recovery transitioning adults from secure inpatient care to various community placements. FIRST Provide high-quality care that prevents avoidable admissions and enables the recovery of individuals who suffer from a significant mental illness who have presented as a significant risk to themselves and/or the public, in the least restrictive setting as close to home as possible.

FIRST Work across agencies in the community to contribute to public safety and reduce reoffending. The team works with colleagues in secondary care to ensure the timely progression from forensic specialist community services to secondary services (such as CMHT and AOT), keeping care pathways progressing and reducing stigma and inequalities.

Main duties of the job

You will provide tailored assessment and intervention for clients who have a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of autism and\or learning disability and for those presenting with a speech, language or communication need.

As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively alongside colleagues from Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Nursing, and other Allied Health Professionals, together with external providers to support the successful recovery, wellbeing and risk management of clients in the community. You will travel to various locations across Birmingham and Solihull and other regions.

The post is fixed term for 12 months. Secondment options considered. No weekend working and flexible working requests are considered up to 37.5 hours. You will receive support from the Professional Lead Speech and Language Therapist related to all aspects of the role.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a range of skills including effective communication with both clients, good organisation and time management skills, self-awareness and reflection, compassion, commitment and inclusion.

oA recognised professional degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy oRegistered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) oDemonstrates highly specialist skills and knowledge in the area of SLCN, complex communication needs and/or neurodevelopmental conditions etc relevant to the role oEvidence of responsibility for leading service development and improvement oDemonstrates knowledge of trauma and adverse childhood experiences in relation to communication needs. oKnowledge and application of specialist assessments and interventions for communication

Desirable

oADOS trained (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) oExperience of working within mental health, CAMHS, secure care or a learning disability environment. oDemonstrates developing knowledge of how psychiatric conditions and\or dual diagnosis's impacts on the communication skills of clients.
