About this role
Associate Application Developer
Job description: Associate Application Developer Thoriva · Remote · Full-Time Thoriva, an Infinite Company, is seeking an application developer to apply AI-assisted development and modern engineering practices within an enterprise mainframe environment. The initial focus will be reducing the current application backlog through code analysis, documentation, testing, automation, and targeted development. As the team builds knowledge and reusable capabilities, the role will increasingly support the organization’s longer-term application modernization journey. The ideal candidate is an early-career developer with hands-on AI development experience, foundational software engineering skills, and the ability to learn complex legacy applications. ABOUT THE COMPANY Thoriva is an AI technology company delivering intelligent, data-driven solutions to transform government operations. We combine AI solutions, commercial expertise, and complex business logic to address government and federal agencies’ biggest challenges. JOB SUMMARY As an Associate Application Developer, you will work alongside experienced mainframe engineers, analysts, testers, and architects. You will use AI-enabled development tools, modern programming languages, automation, and integration technologies to analyze and resolve prioritized backlog items, improve engineering productivity, and create documented, tested, and reusable building blocks for application modernization. Key Responsibilities
• Use AI-assisted development tools for code generation, code explanation, documentation, test creation, impact analysis, troubleshooting, and developer productivity while maintaining traceability of prompts, generated outputs, reviews, test evidence, and final engineering decisions.
• Develop modern utilities, scripts, services, APIs, or automation that help solve problems involving legacy applications and development workflows.
• Analyze legacy source code, technical documentation, batch-job definitions and output, data structures, interfaces, and operational dependencies with guidance from experienced team members.
• Translate legacy business logic into clear technical documentation, test scenarios, service definitions, and modernization-ready requirements that support current backlog delivery and reduce dependency on undocumented institutional knowledge.
• Develop proofs of concept and incremental solutions that connect mainframe capabilities with distributed, cloud, web, data, or API-based technologies, and document the technical findings, constraints, and reusable patterns that should inform future modernization decisions.
• Create and maintain unit tests, automated tests, technical documentation, and reusable engineering assets.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, defect resolution, release activities, and production-support analysis with guidance appropriate to an early-career developer.
• Follow established secure development, SDLC, change management, responsible AI, and release processes.
• Continuously build knowledge of the application domain, mainframe concepts, AI development practices, and modernization patterns.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, data science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Academic, internship, project, or professional experience developing software with a modern language such as Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
• Academic, internship, project, or professional experience using AI-assisted development tools or generative AI capabilities to analyze, generate, test, document, or troubleshoot software.
• Foundational understanding of software development concepts, source control, APIs, testing, debugging, and data structures.
• Ability to learn unfamiliar systems, trace application behavior across technologies, ask effective questions of subject-matter experts, and break complex technical problems into manageable steps.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, written communication, and collaboration skills.
• Willingness to work with legacy systems and partner closely with experienced mainframe developers.
• Ability to critically review AI-generated code, documentation, tests, and analysis for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with established engineering standards before the output is incorporated into a deliverable.
• Ability to work effectively within a team while managing assigned work with appropriate guidance.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with GitHub Copilot, IBM watsonx, Azure AI, or comparable AI-enabled development tools, including practical use for code comprehension, test generation, documentation, or controlled code generation.
• Exposure to cloud platforms, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, REST APIs, microservices, or event-driven architecture.
• Experience with automated testing, code analysis, data transformation, or developer-productivity tooling.
• Familiarity with relational databases, SQL, structured files, or enterprise data integration.
• Coursework, project, internship, or professional exposure to COBOL, JCL, batch processing, job scheduling, VSAM, DB2, CICS, or another enterprise mainframe technology.
• Exposure to regulated, financial services, government, or other mission-critical environments.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. citizen security clearance, if required for client or federal program support.
Compensation & Benefits
