Embalmer II serves as a senior expert in the mortuary field and in the preparation room, requiring at least five (5) years of experience as a licensed Embalmer. This crucial role operates on a rotating 4 on 4 off work week schedule and requires a willingness to alternate schedules to meet the needs of the department for essential mortuary operations. The role is responsible for the professional and dignified preparation of human remains, leading essential embalming functions, overseeing quality control, and providing hands-on mentorship to all embalming staff to ensure the highest standards are consistently met.

• Training and Mentorship: Provide hands-on training to all embalming staff (including new hires and apprentices), demonstrating advanced techniques, sharing best practices, and offering continuous feedback. • Quality Control: Implement and maintain a rigorous quality control process for all cases, conducting post-procedure reviews to ensure every deceased is prepared to the highest standards. • Case Management: Willing to take the lead on complex or challenging cases, overseeing cases requiring reconstructive work or specific legal considerations. Providing guidance and coaching to associates. • Compliance Documentation: Work with management to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Job Aids as well as prepare/present training modules to the mortuary/QC team on a continuous basis • Continuing Education: Explore workshops, courses, articles, seminars etc. to enhance department performance and knowledge Mortuary Operations
• Preparation: Execute all technical procedures, including embalming human remains, dressing, cosmetizing, and casketing human remains for viewing, burial, and other final disposition. • Removals: Execute death calls and perform removals from places of death, including personal homes. • Inventory: Oversee the use of embalming chemicals and supplies (Inventory and Supplies Management), ensuring the preparation room is always well stocked and adhered to all safety protocols. Ensure accurate use of chemicals. • Environment: Maintain a neat and clean work environment, assisting with moving and organizing supplies. Administration & Compliance
• Professionally and courteously answer heavy phone traffic concerning removals and preparation needs. • Maintain positive, professional relationships with co-workers, third-party removal companies, and external partners (hospitals, Coroners Offices). • Ensure strict compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies and procedures. • Self-manage workload and priorities; strictly adhere to attendance and dress code policies. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSING Experience · At least five (5) years’ experience as a licensed Embalmer required. Funeral Directors license preferred. Certification/License · CA Embalmer’s License required · Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities · Knowledge: Demonstrate expert knowledge of industry regulations and preparation policies. · Communication: Professional, clear written and verbal communication skills. · Technical: Detail-oriented with the ability to manage complex tasks and interruptions efficiently. · Software: Proficient in HMIS and other proprietary software, as well as MS Office (Outlook, Excel). · Disposition: Must be self-motivated, adaptable to change, and committed to continuous learning. Work CONDITIONS When considering the work hours associated with this job, the following factors may apply: Work Environment · Must be able to physically and emotionally handle working around human remains. Hazard exposure includes human diseases, chemicals (formaldehyde, embalming fluid), sharps, and occasional low-level radioactivity. Must constantly comply with health and safety regulations. · Work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions Work Postures · Frequent, continuous periods of time standing, up 6 hours per day Physical Demands · Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20-30 bodies/caskets per day, weighing from 70lbs to 300lbs, into and out of refrigerated storage. Work Hours · Working beyond “standard” hours as the need arises This is a rotating four (4) days on, four (4) days off schedule: 7:00am – 5:30pm Compensation: $28.00/hr - $37.00/hr Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
